you could get a 4 gig flash based model, if you're really active a drive based one could be killed with just one drop

Agreed, I really like the flash drive model as well it's less likely to fail and I really am having trouble filling up 2 gigs.
I just recieved a Samsung Sansa C200 so far I'm impressed with it. It's 2 gigs also tunes FM radio and can be used as a voice recorder in class so you can record lectures or conversations whatever. It's about the size of a bic lighter too.

my neice just got the 4gb ipod nano, it's cute, does pics as well as music, doesnt record voice but that is a desirable feature, I've loaded it down with about 3gb of music and I'm stuffing more in it tonight
edit: it does in fact do voice recording

I have an older Dell mp3 player. Although this is a drive based mp3 player, I do feel it should be noted that this guy is quite durable/reliable. I've had it for over 2 years and the battery life is still as it was when I got it new. As for durability, I listen to music all day long while grinding floors at work (dust out the ass floating around) and no problems there. I've dropped it a couple times (it is in a leather case) and it handled the fall like a champ.
Anyways, that was my pride rant for my Dell mp3 player. I feel like I made the right choice between that and an Ipod at the time. Anyone else have a Dell?

i think that the best deal out there right now is the new iPod Shuffle 2nd generation.
It's 1GB, TINY, super light-weight, rechargable, clips on any of your clothes.
and
only 80 bucks! There is a 2GB model out there, but that's way too many songs to sift through without a display. Yeah, i know what youre thinkin...'no display?! fook dat!', but really. ive use the old shuffle for a long time, and it actually wasnt that bad. The price makes it worth it.

This is the one I'm getting. Looks to be about the same dimensions as an ipod shuffle, but with a display. 1Gig. best part: its 80 bucks.

oh, i had a first generation Nano before i got this shuffle, and the thing didnt last me more than 6 months. The buttons on the wheel stopped working, and the display got all fucked up. Plus, i bought the extended warranty for 20 bucks, and they still wouldnt replace it cause of the 'damage' on the surface. Fuck nano's. The new one is made of an aluminum casing, might be better, but idk. You can guinea pig that one. -C
edit: be sure to get these as well. best headphone for the money. period. Gradolabs SR60

a dell axim x51V
the best tool anyone could ever have in their life.
it does everything u could want anything to do for you.
gps, voice recording, mp3 player, video player, games, internet, aim, email, schedules, tasks, remote...
has 2 card slots SD and CF
mine has a 1gig sd and a 2 gig cf, 3gigs. 4gigcf cards are really cheap. You can add as much memory for it as you want.

He wants a small mp3 player, not a pda.
Although I do have much love for the Dell Axim. My father just gave me his old x5 after upgrading and I'm gonna turn it into a GPS unit for my car.

you would be surpized they are pretty small, with the metal case. fits perfectly in the pocket. If you fall itl never break. my axim has fallen sooooo badly and its never broke.
x5 is pretty crap,if u have the new one they are incredible.
its literaly like holding the future in your hand. i have the x50v, but its almost the same to x51v.
i use my axim for gps in my car or when i walk around cities, its great cuz its like having a map in your hand. Also for hiking ive used it to make it out on time before it got dark. (that is using just the map) my gps only works in the car, but you can get one that works anywhere.

ipods are the way to go, they wouldn't be so popular if they weren't the best thing going. no worries about dropping, my first generation 4Gb mini has been trashed in several high speed crashes on foot and on bikes.

thats only good if all u want is play music and run around i guess.
but if u get an all in one tool u can do everything at the same time.
and you cant compare the dropability of a tiny 4gig ipod mini with a 640/480 screen pda which is also tiny and fits in the pocket.
its also very thin, so when its in a pocket it actually fits very well. and its perfect size before being too big.

i hate ipods, i just spent a few hours trying to fix my friends computer because her Ipod trashed a bunch of shit when it went to install itself.
i just got this sansa for xmas: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5130720
It's pretty sweet, 2 gb main storage with an SDmicro slot to add more memory to it. The battery in it is replacable so if it blows out on you, your player isn't dead (unlike the ipod). It does pics, video, voice recording, and accepts .wma files. Im really happy with it even though i already need to buy a memory card since i filled the drive with music,
Fuck ipods.

I disagree. Ipods are simply the most well-known of the DAPs and can be purchased anywhere. Apple has great marketing and have made the word "ipod" synonymous with "mp3 player."
there are many other great DAPs that provide more features and are built with durability in mind. other players have longer battery lives and do not require software to load and unload media onto the player. ipods also only handle a fraction of media types while others can play flac and ogg and wav, etc.
I am not saying that ipods suck. I like their design and I think they are quality players. I just think there are other lesser-known players that are better.

I really want an MP3 player, but I just can't justify spending the amount of money that almost all of these players.
Are there any MP3 players out there under $100 that don't no require Windows XP, have UMS (drag and drop), w/o video?

what is great about the DELL AXIM
is that is uses all flash memory, there are no moving parts. Sure its one hell of a gadjet and looks easy tobreak but it is not. The only real way to break it is crash teh screen.
and all u really want is an mp3 player untill you have it and want more.
belive me, u dont just want an mp3 player. u want everything. PDA are excellent for campuses.
u could listen to music, while chatting on aim if u r waiting for class.
+ u enter all ur class due dates in pda from the first class and it makes life much easier.
u know when u have projects due since the begining of the year syllabus.

the Dell axim x50v or x51v (plays videos as 640/480 res) i recommend the x50, cuz u can get it cheap on ebay. Dell has good deals on all of them. Last time i looked they didnt, but they change fast.
All the X5's
have 2 CARd slots. (can be used at the same time) ( u can also copy stuff from one card to another if need be.)
1 SD - up to 4 gigs. 1 CF - up to 8 gigs
so you can have up to 12 in total. I have 3 on mine. 4 gig cards are really cheap now, u can get it for less then 100 bux, and 2 gig ones like 30-40 bucks.
so the ammount of space it has really is up to you.
also remmeber since its on flash cards there is no spinning disk, pdas liek axim are very hard to break, they have no moving parts. Apparently if it falls underwatter, u even have like a good chance of it working again.
the only real way to break em is to break the screen, and with it u get a METAL case, it first perfectly in any pocket, super durable, u can sit stand what ever on it.
ive had my axim for 1.5 years, ive even dropped it from like 4 ft and it slid like 7 on a wooden floor 1 week after i got it without a case and it was fine. I got a case the next day.
and also let me mention is chargest FULL in 1 hour or less, battey for mp3 lasts 3+ hours. Charging is VERY fast, if u put it on the charge for 20 mins itl charge like 30-40%
