I'm getting tired of winamp. it has a weird habit of just being really slow, and i think it's taking up more processing power than i'd like. what's a good freeware LITE mp3 player?

Well, you'll only be getting worse compatibility. You could try JetAudio.

what do you mean worse compatibility? so far as music types played? foobar plays everything i need it to play. however, i must admit, it's not very user friendly, which is why it's such a small efficient program. but i'm a little confused on the display settings... i don't like the way songs filenames are all jumbled up into one continuous line, rather than having a separate column for each tag (artist, title, album, etc)
is jetaudio a small lite program?

winamp has really been pissing me off.. it doesn't even play ANYTHING 80% the time I try to use it. Not to mention it hogs resources like a bitch and takes like 20 seconds just to load. (Not like I'm on a slow computer either.. 2GB Ram.. 3.00Ghz dual core AMD.. its unfuckingacceptable)
I just said fuck it and started using windows media player. I know right.. but at least the shit works.

those are the exact same problems i was having. it would just freeze for like 30 minutes at a time. and whenever it froze, it'd be taking like 100% processing power. it pissed me off, i want a change... but not wmp...

Can you queue up like 9 million hours of music with it.. is it lightweight.. does it support visualizations?

Quintessential Player supports visualizations, is very lightweight using very little resources. Don't know about q'ing up tons of songs- never tried it..its a very modern player though so I imagine it does..has plugins available, etc.
Most people prefer it to winamp.
From the cnet review:
"Other players may receive more attention, but it's hard to beat Quintessential Player's efficiency, stability, and flexibility. Easily customizable and built to support almost any plug-in, this freeware tool just added a fine video player. CD-ripping and MP3-converting features increase the program's value without bloat.
The stylish interface includes a lot of sensibly set hot keys, making playback and music management a no-click affair. It also is completely skinnable, with plenty of designs created by a large community of developers and fans. The extremely helpful Quintessential Player Web site provides a library of optional tools and full developer kits for creating your own skins or plug-ins.
Our only beef is that you can only exit the full-screen-video mode through the right-click context menu, whereas the other functions have buttons that appear when you hover your cursor at the bottom of the screen. Quintessential Player takes up less memory than Winamp, making it a smart choice for performance-conscious users."

bagh.. i think i'm too used to winamp. nothing else is as intuitive to use as winamp. but i'm angry at it's pension for freezing and fucking up. i tried foobar, not user-friendly at all. i tried quintessential.. no library feature, only playlists, and it's gay having to load my entire library as a playlist whenever i want to browse.
i even got classic winamp 2.95, but it's not recognizing a lot of my wma tags, which is annoying the fuck out of me and i can't figure out how to make it que up the entire library when i double-click a selection. so basically... i like the latest winamp, i just want it to stop being a bitch. any suggestions?

The latest version actually does have an integrated library function:

does foobar have a library function? i've tried so many players i can't even remember which is which now.
it is mandatory for the player to have the library function. i have over 13000 songs and i hate having to make a playlist every time i wanna listen to something. i like to type the first part of the band i have in mind, have it jump right there, then i double click and it starts. qmp would be perfect if i could just figure out what the fuck is up with the playback.

Yeah; you create playlists in tabs, like your internet browser; and they save.

yeah, i don't like having to make a playlist. and i'm constantly updating my music, i don't want to have to recreate my library playlist every time. nor do i want to wait for the 13k long playlist to load up every time.

Well, I've never used the playlist feature; it might be more well-featured than I'm making it out to be. You should also look into Media Player Classic and VLC player; they play audio files too.

itunes takes up too much processing power and it doesn't play wma's. i've still got a significant amount of wma's from before i realized how much they suck, but i still don't want to lose those albums.

Foobar is great. It does take a while to set it up good but it's worth it.Here is a link to a good config + set up guide. It has a playlist tree which is what you are looking for, you just tell it what directories and it lists it all in a expanding/collapsing tree. Looks like this....

Used to use winamp but now library is so huge I needed something to manage it. Foobar is perfect, it takes a bit to set it up but once that's done you have a perfect, highly customizable library.

bagh to wmp. not a fan. foobar is quickly growing on me now that i'm starting to understand how to customize. it's very quick, doesn't use much resources, really diggin' it. but it does hiccup every now and then, and that can get annoying.

If I understand you correctly your main problem with winamp was it used too much resources.
Why don't you just get more resources for your computer?
