I disagree. Ipods are simply the most well-known of the DAPs and can be purchased anywhere. Apple has great marketing and have made the word "ipod" synonymous with "mp3 player."
there are many other great DAPs that provide more features and are built with durability in mind. other players have longer battery lives and do not require software to load and unload media onto the player. ipods also only handle a fraction of media types while others can play flac and ogg and wav, etc.
I am not saying that ipods suck. I like their design and I think they are quality players. I just think there are other lesser-known players that are better.

I really want an MP3 player, but I just can't justify spending the amount of money that almost all of these players.
Are there any MP3 players out there under $100 that don't no require Windows XP, have UMS (drag and drop), w/o video?

what is great about the DELL AXIM
is that is uses all flash memory, there are no moving parts. Sure its one hell of a gadjet and looks easy tobreak but it is not. The only real way to break it is crash teh screen.
and all u really want is an mp3 player untill you have it and want more.
belive me, u dont just want an mp3 player. u want everything. PDA are excellent for campuses.
u could listen to music, while chatting on aim if u r waiting for class.
+ u enter all ur class due dates in pda from the first class and it makes life much easier.
u know when u have projects due since the begining of the year syllabus.

how much storage capacity does a PDA typically have? Anything less an one or two gigs and I am not interested.

the Dell axim x50v or x51v (plays videos as 640/480 res) i recommend the x50, cuz u can get it cheap on ebay. Dell has good deals on all of them. Last time i looked they didnt, but they change fast.
All the X5's
have 2 CARd slots. (can be used at the same time) ( u can also copy stuff from one card to another if need be.)
1 SD - up to 4 gigs. 1 CF - up to 8 gigs
so you can have up to 12 in total. I have 3 on mine. 4 gig cards are really cheap now, u can get it for less then 100 bux, and 2 gig ones like 30-40 bucks.
so the ammount of space it has really is up to you.
also remmeber since its on flash cards there is no spinning disk, pdas liek axim are very hard to break, they have no moving parts. Apparently if it falls underwatter, u even have like a good chance of it working again.
the only real way to break em is to break the screen, and with it u get a METAL case, it first perfectly in any pocket, super durable, u can sit stand what ever on it.
ive had my axim for 1.5 years, ive even dropped it from like 4 ft and it slid like 7 on a wooden floor 1 week after i got it without a case and it was fine. I got a case the next day.
and also let me mention is chargest FULL in 1 hour or less, battey for mp3 lasts 3+ hours. Charging is VERY fast, if u put it on the charge for 20 mins itl charge like 30-40%
