I've had a Creative Zen and an Ipod and the Zen is waaaaaaayyyy fucking better. The ipod is smaller though, but I don't like the way the buttons and menu are.

I'm a Phillips fan, I bought the 8 gig for a pretty good price, no complaints and no buttons that get broke

Both my roommate's ipods have broken twice (EACH!). (A nano 2gb, and 4gb) the software is buggy, and the device itself is a pain in the ass. You can't just add files to it like a normal mp3 player. You are required to use itunes to add music (A massive turnoff for me, considering the software is shody)
All in all, what I want to say is fuck the iPod.
Personnally, I use a Lexar LDP-600 which I love. Tell me, everyone. Can your ipod:
-Record Audio? -Record FM Radio? -Play FM Radio? -Increase playback speed (fucking handy for relistening to a meeting or class) -BROADCAST to any FM radio station (No dongle, no bullshit, press the button and it's playing over the radio) -Durability (Mine has fallen down cement stairs several times, and has never missed a beat.)
These are features that the ipod, in all it's glory, does not have. For such a "premium" device.. all these must come as bulky external addons.
That said, the lexar ldp is kinda old (usb1) and could be improved by today's technologies.. but it's a stellar example of what an MP3 player should be. Apple should take note.
My suggestion falls with iRiver. They've been putting out slicker than shit mp3 players for a while, and I've always heard good things about them. My next player will be an iRiver.

i have a creative zen xtra, 60gig hard drive went out on me, sent it back, said it wasn't under warranty and they wanted $160 to replace it. i said fuck that, bought another one for $50 on ebay and did it myself...and a 80 gig one at that (bigger size worked perfectly).
i like the zen because i didnt have to convert all my music to whatever apple uses, and if the battery goes out its easy to get a replacement, and the hard drive was a piece of cake to replace. plus if you get NOTMAD putting files on it is a breeze. you can even put data files on it and use it as an external hard drive.
creative can be a bitch to deal with, but luckily you dont have to, as you can fix most things yourself.

Check out Archos. They're pretty bad ass. I bought my ipod video, saw those things, and immediately had buyers remorse.

Do you hear about ipods breaking all the time cause their crap or because everyone has an ipod?
I would be willing to be if you did a break down of units sold to units repaired that for the most part most mp3 players would be similiar.

LoFiFunk said: that's not an ipod. My dad said he was going to buy me an ipod for my upcoming birthday, but I really don't wanna be part of the ipod community. So I am looking for a cool MP3 player other than an ipod so I can have him get me that...what you got?
yeah, I think ipods suck.
I highly recommend this player: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009Q4...9791133?ie=UTF8
that is the best there is.
