Can you use a pup from an unrooted cactus as a scion?

Can you use a pup from an unrooted cactus as a scion?

Also, does a rootstock photosynthesize and act as a source?

Also, if you completely buried a rootstock in dirt, and the dirt touched the scion, would it grow another root system from the scion? What effect would this have on both of the specimens?

Of course, although it is always best to use plants in active growth.

yes.  best not dehydrated

yes

& yes.  if the stock is buried, it cant absorb light, so it eventually goes yellow then brown and acts solely as a root stock.  if both root, its fine.  if the scion touches the dirt, careful with rot and wet medium for sensitive species.
