Re: Using cereus monstrose as a rootstock?? [Re: Solipsis]

Well as in tissue culture, I think new shoots can develop from single cells can't they? Especially when properly stimulated like you said. But I don't remember whether that is only true for meristem culture and whether other cells would just divide into an amorphous blob of tissue.

Back in the days when I was interested in orchids, tissue culture (collected from dormant buds, so it may be different for "normal" cells) involved keeping the cultured tissue in a more or less vertical revolving platform (a clinostat) to keep it from initiating roots and stems because of gravity influence. The blobs would grow as blobs and when big enough divided in four other blobs, returned to the clinostat and the process would go on until you had enough blobs for your needs. These, once taken out of the clinostat, would soon produce roots that would grow down and stems that would grow up. I think the same principle would apply to "blobs" obtained from other types of cells BUT, back in those days, monopodial orchids like Paphiopedilum were not tissue cultured for lack of axillary buds to start with.

Wow that is pretty cool and weird-looking, something I would love building with Lego Technics or normal components!
Also interested to see what a grown up plant would do at zero perceived g. It also seems you shouldn't revolve pregnant women in a similar fashion, not because of blobbing but fragile bones at the least? Never realized any of that..

Am also unclear on what happens with differentiated plant tissue if you try to culture it, if you indeed just get a proliferating piece of tissue, if plants have a sort of intercellular matrix that helps organize tissues like we do... but no matter: the point is that you should start from meristemic tissue / buds / nodes I guess.

Also by coincidence read in tissue culture literature that growing from a single cell is a layman's idea and normally nobody would do it. (Less material = easier to sterilize but packs less energy to start with) my bad

@ Technician OP: Here's to hoping you can overcome that loph stunting, although if anything about this sounds like a stunt its a clinostat
