Rootstock pupping

If your rootstock of a grafted cacti begins to pup is it a good idea to remove the pup? Will the stock's pup take up more resources than the stock will give to the scion of a different species?

it is a good idea to remove it as it will take up energy, but i prefer to wait til it gets an inch or so, depending, to remove it and let it callous and plant it
