Re: are anti depressants the answer??? [Re: nowwhoutthink]
    #12066622 -

There is no single answer to depression.

Exercise is great for mild cases of depression, but major depression can't always be treated with lifestyle changes alone. Taking an active role in your treatment is critical. Don't just blindly take something a doctor gives you without asking questions. Always tell them about any side-effects or concerns you have.

Psychiatric drugs are not all bad. They have helped a shit-load of people. Anti-depressants don't make everyone "feel like a zombie." Find the right one for you. Everyone reacts to medications and treatment differently.

More exercise is always a good idea, no matter the degree of depression, that is if it's so great that you aren't up to exercise. But it doesn't sound like you are, so yes, indulge.

Tried about 5 different ADs, did nothing, except Effexor-XR which helped for a few weeks then I was depressed again. Currently on Cymbalta... It's doing something, nothing zombifying, but gets rid of anxiety which can make you seem a little too calm in situations.\

The WORST and by far the WORSSSTTT thing is to get is severe akathisia(sp) especially when trying to sleep. I got this with Remeron/Avanza/Mirtazipine. It's like an inner restlessness and cramping of the muscles that will turn you manic. Horrible... I'm now on Benztropine to combat it because it's also a side effect of another non-AD medication.

Out of all the AD's I've researched, Wellbutrin would be the one I'd try first.

I've had moderate success with 5-htp; I'd recommend it

look into a supplement called sam-E. it's expensive, but it works well for a long a people (and pretty much free of side effects). if you do take it, also make sure to read up on things good to take it with (vitamin b12, frolic acid, TMG, all help with sam-E absorption).

I don't know why but SAM-E and all of the methylators like methyl B-12 make me feel like shit.  I have $50 worth of sam E just sitting around my house.

Common man don't take that crap. Do you really want to be a member of the Prozac smile community? Its dehumanizing deal with your depression and work it out of your system face your depression head on its the only way.  :ashstrobe:

Lots of misinformation on this thread.

I tried Prozac and it made me sick (puking) so i stopped.

I was then prescribed Lexapro. I tried to take it on and off for almost a year and it never worked.

I then decided i was done with being depressed and decided to actually be faithful to my lexapro regiment. It took about 4 months before I stopped feeling really depressed.

It took another 3 months to ween myself off of lexapro by slowly cutting down my dosage. I am no longer depressed and have not relapsed this past year.

Depression is a difficult journey. Expect nothing to be easy or quick. Exercise will help but is not a cure for major depression. Take your prescribed dosage everyday. Try not to keep switching your prescriptions every couple of weeks. Find an ssri that has minimal side effects and then stick with it until you are cured because these drugs actually do work.

I have been on every AD ever made almost, including celexa.

Have you tried running two miles at least a day?

If the answer is no, then there are still other options than turning to chemicals.

Drugs dont really work. There is only one way to truly solve your problems sure its not as easy as popping pills but all that does is mask the problem. Its unhealthy to repress your problems and darker emotions you have to deal with them or they will present themselves to you later in life. Don't listen to this guy do some research.

I've been (willingly) on Cymbalta (SNRI) among other anti-psychotics and ADHD meds for awhile. It's not bad once you get used to it, but it's really not worth it for everyone. Let's just say my condition was much worse than the side effects.

The one thing I absolutely HATE about taking them is how people that know nothing about them act when they first find out you're taking them. They always have this disgusting look on their faces. Then they either start completely ignoring you or treat me like I'm supposed to be perfectly happy because I'm on anti-depressants.

Being on drugs is hard.

I have not tried Celexa.

To clear up all the misinformation about depression let me tell you a little more about my backstory.

The summer I got depression I was working as a raft/kayak guide. I got probably 10 hours of hard physical exercise 6 days a week. I worked with my GF at the time and was basically paid to have a good time. Depression came on after I suffered a concussion about halfway through the summer. It was definitely a chemical imbalance that was my problem. Basically, no amount of exercise or meditation was going to cure it. Believe me, I tried those methods to no avail for over a year.

I suggest searching the rest of the internet and trying to find places where people have actually overcome depression to get a better feeling for what will help you overcome it as well. A lot of people, even on this thread, admit that they think ADs are bad yet have never been depressed or taken them. Their opinion should mean nothing to you. I've always wondered why people on the shroomery post things about SSRIs even though they have never taken an SSRI and have never been depressed, ie all the "run x miles and you'll be cured" people.
