Pascals Wager
    #12032936 -

So recently my mother sends me a text message telling me to pray to God for thanking me for everything I have.  Everything I have I believe is half chance. Either it could of happened or it didn't (to which it obviously did hence why I have it or do not have it)  I then tell her jokingly that I have yet he continues to ignore me.  Parents don't really know I'm agnostic.

I believe in Pascals Wager.  Hopefully those reading this know of it too.  Trying to explain this to my mom seems challenging because of her one sided logic.  God exist.

What do you all think about Pascals wager.

An interesting thought of an infinite dilemma would be to ask God to create an object so heavy that he/she/it them self cannot lift the object.

I define a God as being:
  • omnipotent
  • Omnibenevolent
  • omnipresent

Just looking for some input on this or some new information.

For pascals wager to be valid you would have to have some way of knowing which idea to believe in, and that there will be no hard feelings about your gamble. :nonono:

well I believe he does not exist but believing he does wouldn't hurt me in any way.

yes Pascal is an interesting man as are many philosophers.  Which is what I am majoring in.

Pascal's Wager is basically just the principle of faith. Faith by definition is believing in something that can't logically be proven. It's making a gamble to the extreme, but if you live that way playing the safe bet(I'm a horrible gambler by the way, lol) you will be at peace because you lived by your faith and expect to be rewarded in the afterlife. I myself feel as though an omniscient, omnibenevolent God would not require an unquestioning faith because of the vast number of faiths in this world. How could anyone on Earth at any point in time be given the chance to follow an unquestioning faith, if they are never exposed to it? And why would a "God" that is omniscent and omnibenevolent not give every person on Earth an oppurtunity to follow that faith?

"Doesn't the "the vast number of faiths in this world" hint that there is most likely no unifying God behind them?"
No, it hints towards the differences of people because of their cultures in relation to their different surroundings and upbringings.

Pascal's Wager makes perfect logical sense, in my opinion, but you can't force yourself to believe in God.  I almost wish I believed in God, but I just can't accept the idea of God, and I can't force myself into doing so.

It's about believing in something that seems beneficial for you to believe in in case it turns out to be true.

That's not illogical? In case it turns out to be true I'll just believe in some guy who lives in the sky and created everything just cauase it might help me. Illogical
And I never claimed to unify all faiths under one god...I just stated that my concept is that a being with a title as God, omnipotent, omniscent, omnibenevolent being would not be so petty to create one true religion and only let certain people know about it, ie. Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. My point was that NO God would exist in reality to cause a split in people if they truly were omni-all three words, that's petty and ungodly.

True believers just don't get this.

It seems like none of us believe in God but we are all debating the concept of God...that made me laugh very hard

It doesn't make perfect logical sense to me, but I'm often reminded I'm dumb. Please explain this logical sense of the wager to me... And explain how his wager makes sense, but still you can't accept it. Seems contradictory to me.

P.S. You're the first person I've met on the net that's heard Cynic, I guess. :headbang:

Think of it like this...  You're going on a somewhat long drive.  You don't really know how much gas is in your car.  This means there is a possibility you may have to get gas at some point.  You can go to the bank and get some cash just in case you need gas, or you can save yourself the hassle of going to the bank and hope that whatever amount of gas in your car will make the whole drive.

I think it's pretty logical to say that it would be a better idea to go to the bank than risk running out of gas.  It's a matter of 'better safe than sorry'; better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it.

Pascal's Wager is essentially the same thing.  The consequences of believing in God if he does not exist are nothing compared to the consequences of NOT believing in God if he DOES exist.

There is a difference between not believing in God (passive, possibly called agnosticism) and believing that God does not exist (active, possibly called atheism).  I can only speak for myself, but I am neither convinced that he does or doesn't exist.

It's illogical to me. It's like if I wore garlic cloves around my neck everywhere i went just incase I encounter a vampire. Or like people with OCD having to knock on something so many times until it feels right, it's just an illogical form of insurance to placate someone.

I assume you are sure that there is no God, in which case I absolutely agree with you.

no i'm not sure but just because there is a possibility of God existing doesn't mean I should blindly follow. There is a possibility I could spontaneously combust but I don't sit in a tub of water all day, my point is that if you blindly follow because of what if's you could easily be led astray. All because of a possibility.
