What tricks do you use to get to them to germinate?

I've ordered some spores from there, I have some verm/wbs jars ready for it when it arrives. Will that work for them? Is there a guide somewhere on how to grow these?

my spores are from my own grow, but originally i bought spawn. i currently have about 15 pounds of commercial grain spawn available if anyone is interested. just pm me.

here's some of the pics.
i am using small 12 by 12 by 3" deep tubs to grow these babies, but my current grow is using much larger substrate bases, i want to try to maximize my results this time and the literature i've read supports these larger substrate volumes. i should mention here that these first tubs ran into cobweb mold problems early on because my substrate was too damp, so i after researching several articles i decided to use a 3% hydrogen peroxide spray on my 2 tubs to try to save them. it worked so i got a good first and second flush from my little tubs.
consequently, because of my earlier problems, all my substrate is mixed and pasteurized much drier now and i never completely cover up like the first time. live and learn,




compost jars colonizing



i did actually buy a syringe from MRCA, but it's result were anemic compared to what i have growing now.
i did about 30 transfers to agar 2 days ago from my compost jars before i spawned them to my homemade compost substate. i changed some of my agar techniques this time around, too.
i will be working on lc with these new agar plates. i have some eberbach tools i want to use and a nice used magnetic stir plate i've been playing with.
additionally as i may have mentioned earlier i am building new compost piles for this ongoing project. i need to make about 700 finished pounds of compost based on what i currently have available.

i actually did not eat any of these because i was looking to maximize my prints. they were worth far more to me in printed form.

at this time i have over 100 pounds of spawned substrate. some is mostly colonized while the rest is in various stages of incubation and mycelial run. i expect a much more significant harvest this time around Lennybernadino.

I used live tissue of A. bisporus on the same plate as spores of A. blazei to wake up the latter. It took a few weeks, but the culture this method produced is very aggressive. It remains to be seen how it compares to houdinihar's, as I am growing that one as well.

As an aside, I have trouble making LC from houdinihar's A. blazei. The method I use for making LC is squirting sterile water on a colonized agar plate, scraping it, and sucking the water back up with bits of tissue in it. Then, this mix goes into an LC jar (usually dextrose+peptone+water) and is stirred continuously @ room temperature.

For some reason, the tissue bits don't grow in the solution. All other species (and that other variant of A. blazei) work fine with this method.

newest update for the agaricus blazei.

full size--my 4 section 100 mm plate full of healthy agaricus blazei mycelia.
this is my P1 plate--believe it or not these only took 3 days to expand to this size from the agar slice.




a little closeup--these P1's have a much smoother growth pattern than the mycelia they were pulled from.



as you can see on my baggie, this agar medium consists of PDYA plus a little bit (about 4 grams/liter) of my compost mix as recommended by Stamets. the potatoes, yeast  and compost were cooked together, then strained, then the dextrose added just before the agar was put in. the agar was sterilized for 1 hour because of the addition of the compost mix.
i saved on full 4 section plate in the fridge after i plated out 32 sections of P2 babies from a different P1.

should be putting my casing layer on to 2 of my bags next week and incubating that.

have 8 of the 4-section plates of the A., blazei P2 now finished. 7 of these look great, one sucks. just sitting there. won't pitch yet. could still take off.

tomorrow, MLK day, is my casing day for 2 of the 5 bags of spawned compost.
also have an experiment going with some LC.
will also do some more LC tomorrow from my P2 clones.

thanks to all the interest this has brought. it is fun when things work out.
i have read tons of research papers on these guys and it's always interesting what one can learn.

text update--
didn't get the casing on until January 20th for my 2 bags, but boy you should see them now. there are mycelial fragments dusting the surface and sides in both of these bags. looks pretty. will actually post new pics wednesday of this week.

have one of my 3 bags remaining that has the green blight (trich). have placed outside away from anything useful and left in its container--hope it will get sun scorched. the other 2 are fine and filling with beautiful mycelia. they still have a ways to go, though.

something terrible happended to all of my plates mentioned in my last post, but like a trooper i have come back and reinoculated new plates with seed spawn, and several grain jars with the same spawn. these new plates are looking spic and span and will be ready wednesday for me to make some new LC jars. will eventually make some wedges available in the free wedge thread soon--keep watching if interested.

one of the new plates--took some mycelial fragments from a single section of this plate and used them to inoculate new 1/2 pint LC jars.




one of the cased bags done Jan 20th. see how this particular bag demonstrates strong rhizomorphic growth and fuzzy growth.



here's a closeup of the rhizomorphic section--looks strong and white



here's a pciture of another bag with totally different growth characteristics. not only that but you can see a little greenish-yellow seedling popping up towards the bottom middle of the picture



and a closeup of that bag with some rhizo growth shown'



this is the fourth bag and it was inoculated on January 6th with 6  1/2 pint jars of my compost mix BRF--it is filling very nicely with mycelial growth and has good speed for this mycelial run.

The jar I made from a wild Spore sytringe went to the maggots and I am trying to get a piece on agar hope it works, cause It mahy be hile before I find another wild cultur .

latest pics of the agaricus blazei grow.

one of the bags that is fully colonized and overrunning the top. both bags have been placed outside to initiate pinning. temps here are in the 60's today and very wet.



same bag different angle--again notice the little plants growing there. no problem for the fungus. plants grow natively among them




here's a little agaricus blazei LC from mycelia scraped from one of my plates. this lc is 6 days old ans has grown quite abit in that time. i'm using R.O. water plus dextrose for the carb source




here's a closeup of that little mass of cells growing happily in their home. i actually have about 3 small colonies in this jar and in another jar i have a single colony that has fixated itself almost deadcenter on the bottom. i also have three other larger volumes jars i'm working on and one of those is on a spinner plate. that mycelia was obtained from one of my plates and placed in the waring blender and spun as mentioned by stamets. they've only been growing for 2 days now.

2/10/10 update--pics from a couple of days ago--nice and warm outside before the cold front hit.


this is a pic of my homemade compost before pasteuriztion. using a mycobag. i don't like these very much for pastuerizing--they tend to leak too much after one or 2 cooks. i need something better since i don't have a bulk pasteurizing setup yet. we talked about that in another thread though--



sunny bag--now check out this bag and see how it looks compared to my last grow--on the last one the exact same thing happened-i got top overgrow, then pinning, then good growth. my temps are a little cooler here (except inside 76 degrees all the time in winter), but i didn't have any cobweb probs this either.




a little bit better closeup of bag 1--you can see the color changes a little on the mycelia as it ages--tends to turn tannish in places.




now here's bag 2 in good ole sol.




i have read in research articles that pinning usually starts to take place within 14-21 days after casing has been applied. it has been right at 21 days today. plus i have been doing temp drops several days in a row.

we'll see how everything turns out. i used my All American 941 today for some bulk compost pasteurizing. here's a stock picture from Amazon and they are cheap. i'll provide a link too. i don't have anything to do with this seller.

So if someone wants to start growing them what should we purchase? I was looking for spores but apparently its hard to start from them? What are you going to do with all these mushies once you grow them all? I was thinking of a personal grow to have them. Health benefits sounds great.
