2/10/10 update--pics from a couple of days ago--nice and warm outside before the cold front hit.

this is a pic of my homemade compost before pasteuriztion. using a mycobag. i don't like these very much for pastuerizing--they tend to leak too much after one or 2 cooks. i need something better since i don't have a bulk pasteurizing setup yet. we talked about that in another thread though--

sunny bag--now check out this bag and see how it looks compared to my last grow--on the last one the exact same thing happened-i got top overgrow, then pinning, then good growth. my temps are a little cooler here (except inside 76 degrees all the time in winter), but i didn't have any cobweb probs this either.

a little bit better closeup of bag 1--you can see the color changes a little on the mycelia as it ages--tends to turn tannish in places.

now here's bag 2 in good ole sol.

i have read in research articles that pinning usually starts to take place within 14-21 days after casing has been applied. it has been right at 21 days today. plus i have been doing temp drops several days in a row.

we'll see how everything turns out. i used my All American 941 today for some bulk compost pasteurizing. here's a stock picture from Amazon and they are cheap. i'll provide a link too. i don't have anything to do with this seller.

purchase link:
Purchase All American 941

hope this has been enlightening for everyone so far.
keep hanging everyone--should have fruit soon if everything goes ok.

take care,
houdinihar

hey man, i'm lovin' this thread. i'm glad it's going slow since i don't get alot of time to keep up with other peoples growlogs.

what is your compost consist of? i have a big heap of mostly of lawn and leaf cuttings, fruit&veg waste in the warmer months, occasionally the failed coir subs , and now i'm doing a lot of oysters so spent straw logs (6-10) will be inthere soon but it's too cold to really de-compose now.

how would these do in an outdoor bed? i want' to try something in a flower bed this spring with wheat straw and eucalyptus mulch and compost.

artizen,
my compost is made of coffee grounds, straw, urea, or ammonium sulfate, gypsum, lime, and spanish cane that is chopped up in a shredder to give some bulk--plus plenty of water. all this is composted inside of large plastic garbage cans for about 3 weeks--plenty of air holes in my bins, plus i empty them out every few days and turn the piles to mix. each large garbage can can make around 125-150 pounds at a time.
i know that winter is a poor time to compost since the temps impede the bacterial reactions in the pile, especially in smaller piles like mine. you just have to do the best you can until spring or summer.
outdoor growing is possible, and done commercially in brazil, and does work out okay from a greenhouse if it isn't too hot inside--up to 90 degrees is okay with these guys.
will keep everyone posted with new pics and progress when able.

So if someone wants to start growing them what should we purchase? I was looking for spores but apparently its hard to start from them? What are you going to do with all these mushies once you grow them all? I was thinking of a personal grow to have them. Health benefits sounds great.

oxalic32,
spores---i have spores, plus grain spawn..yes spores are hard to germ on agar, but they definitely will grow from sterilized compost, like in a little brf jar, or modded brf with peat or a little compost added. the mycelia can then be transferred to agar for cleanup if you want to, otherwise just use the spawned jars to inoculste your compost.

apparently, health benefits of all sorts are some of the major reasons that the japanese are major purchasors of this mushroom. immune modulating, in addition to tumor regression and/or suppression is being studied. worldwide wants far outstrip available resources in this dept. not only that, but this fungus is tasty in contrast to so many other medicinals.

i am hopeful, of course, but i don't like to count my chickens before they hatch, oxalic32. i do have some of my first batch dried and these can be used for teas. my major concern is building up spore stocks, since these are hard to get a hold of. as mentioned earlier i do have heavy spore print sections available. just pm me.

Quote:
if someone wants to start growing them what should we purchase

1. some type of spore, agar culture, grain spawn, or LC
2. compost--these are secondary decomposers
3. warmish environment 70-90, plus good humidity, 90-100 during spawn run--takes about 3-4 weeks to colonize entire substrate. can be grown indoors or out. my compost is placed into plastic sacks after pasteurization and spawned as i put the compost in. some commercial farms do the same.
4. casing layer is a must--they need dirt plus peat--needs to be lite with good waterholding capacity-

good luck. they are worth learning about.

ACtualy in my very lmited experience, A blasei is particularly easy to grow from spores, I tried once and succeded once .

How did you do it? The spored I got haven't done anything for a couple weeks. The mycelium I got from someone is doing well however.

I picked some A.Blasei from a potted plant I bought out of a nursery before its viel broke, I wiped it with 10%iodine, and opened the viel with a steril scalpel, then let the spores print on aluminum, alluminum to ziplock, leave in sun to dry(use a silica gel packet if you have em). Make spore syringe, leave 30 huors. that is all probably obvious,. then I coppied houdinihairs technique of sterilizing compost, in this case a mix of about 50% leached cow manure, 25% shredded palm hear waste )partially composted, and 25%rice straw )partially composted, and a few scoops of coffee grounds for good measures, I pressure cooked it and then did the standard spore syringe inoculation . Thy germinated in about three days and swent to work colonising .
I feel A blasie is particularly well adapted to deal with bacterial contaminants, and may even need them in order to germinate and grow propperly, so in this case I may have had success becausre of improper steril technique (spores from wild)I tried the same techniqe with straw mushrooms and met with horrible failure so far(straw mushrooms are particularly dirty in the wild it seems)
Another possible explanation for success is that I am using wild spores in their native habitat instead of strains isolated for qualities wich are probably not spore viability in foreign habitats with a different microflora .
Thats what I did and My microphorous tape was not well placed, as a bunch of fruit flies got in through an emberassibng crease in the tape and maggiots started multiplying in the jar , i had to grab ann unmaggoted piece to put into agar culture, wich I now have three plates of uncontaminated A Blazie from that jar .

like Lenny, and as you see from my jar pics, i used my spore syringe to inoculate sterilized BRF/compost mix. mine took a little longer to form mycelia as my inside temps were set at 76 degrees, but they did germ after about a week. i later used some of these jars to inoculate a grow i currently have going on. i am going to place my casing mix today on 2 more of my bags.
will update with pics soon.

Okay everyone finally, a decent update for my blazei growing.
for some reason--maybe lack proper moisture/FAE control, my bags stalled out, but are making a comeback with better temps and care.

here now are my latest and greatest efforts with my spawn to straw in tubs, and now cased. everything takes time, doesn't it?

this casing is simple--a peat garden soilless mix with perlite. will apply the dirt water in a bout a week as required. these little tubs are my favorites for just about anything small. they are 12 by 12 by 3" and easy to work with. all tubs have drainage holes as required for this species.

enjoy the picts:

3 of 6 tubs fully colonized with beautiful mycelium

close up--fuzzy landscape

all 6 tubs cased and ready--almost

as you can see temps are climbing around here.

regular brf w/ coffee

wbs inoculated

plus right now i have several jars of fully colonized grain ready to go.

grow update:
from April the 6th to yesterday, the 13th--here's how far the casing has been run through. the weather has been overcast and rainy lately and temps in the 60-70s mainly, high humidity. all the tubs are about the same. 6 in all.

will add my soil water today.

hello again friends--finally time for another update.

one out of six tubs is producing, just like the last time when i had an upside down fruit. you cannot rush these babies for sure, but i feel that perserverence will help me to unlock these secrets. i have absolutely no contams at this time and everything is outside on my porch.
i also think that my growing conditions are less than ideal at the moment. fortunately, i can rectify that in the near term and finish my little experiment. i still have 7 pounds of fresh spawn to use up, plus a couple of hundred pounds of my homemade compost.
hopefully i can get a picture or two posted monday.

take care and keep the faith,
houdinihar

did not see this patent mentioned.. good read,http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6378244.html

all done in non compost substrates and even uncased.

Well I am doing lousy
I did one run, but they stalled and I thought perhaps too much hpoo and not enough green component compost. Did another run with less poo more straw and they are running alright, but not fruiting.
I can't say they are fully colonized yet, so I guess I am just still bummed from before but I had thought/heard that they were fairly easy to grow.
It may be that it is so hot right now here for them (94-100 days and not cool at night)
But I'll keep watching. I will get some pics of them. I have all mine outdoors. There is time in the season to do more and I am going to until I get a production method.
I just wanted to drive to town with that truckload of blazei's this year and that ain't happening....maybe next season...

edit: I think I have the same strain as Houdini? Got 'em from Meph at the co-op, so I figured that is where they came from, but not sure.
