aspen grow logs

Hey all,

Been tryin to get my act together to start growing.  Just a couple questions.  I'm in Colorado and there isn't a lot of hardwood, but we have lots and lots of Aspen.  It would be pretty ez to go cut a bunch if I needed.  I'm just wondering if I could make grow logs using aspen?  Also, which strain might be best.

If it turns out that aspen is no good, anyone know of a softwood and a strain suitable for Colorado growing(logs and indoor)?

Also, we have a few aspens on our property...just wondering the minimum diameter a log needs to be.  Could you make mini dowels?

Aspen is hardwood.  It works fine. 

You want mostly sawdust, but a few chips tossed in are OK.  I have a large Aspen grove on my property as well as lots of Alder, birch and maple.  I chip them up and mix it all together.  I also save all the sawdust from cutting firewood by putting a tarp under the chain saw.  I get about a 55 gallon drum of sawdust per cord of firewood.

Any tree that loses its leaves in winter is a good source for growing mushrooms.  There may be exceptions, but I'm not aware of them.  I've used Western larch(tamarack), birch, aspen, oak, elm, cherry, alder, maple, apple, and a few others I can't think of now.  All worked very well.

Thanks for the reply rr.  I have another question you might be able to help with...Some of the aspens I have access too are fairly skinny, maybe 5 inches in diameter at the most.  What do you think the minimum diameter for a grow log would be and could you just use smaller dowels for smaller logs if you had to?  Kind of thinking about just crossing logs on the side of the house and throwin a tarp over them.

5" diameter is really about the largest you want to use.  I use 1/4" spiral grooved dowel pins for all logs, regardless of size.  It's also best to cut the logs in the late winter or early spring before they leaf out.
