Used to be an Evolutionary Biology major. I did well at it too. I always made straight A's and worked in the research labs 2 or 3 days a week.

Now I'm switching to Anthropology.

I'll be graduating wish a BA in Biology in May. I would go for the BS degree but that means another year and taking calc 2 and 3, and a bunch of computer science classes. Also means another year of college. I already lost a year when I transferred to my current college and got set back another year because of physics (fuck that class!).

I worked in a neuroscience lab for about 2 years(some of my fluorescence microscopy/immunohistochemistry work was published in a peer reviewed journal) , then worked in a marine biology lab last summer. Gonna go for my PhD in marine biology... yet another reason not to go for the BS in biology. Marine biologists use calculus and computer programming just about..... never.

And we have or have had plenty of higher level (PhD/MD) scientists on the Shroomery. A good Shroomery friend of mine is in his 4th year of med school right now.

Hey Gumby, weren't u doing some chemical syntheses. I remember this thread about some prick who stole and finished your experiment instead of u. So i thought u're a chemist

Haha nah, I'm not a chemist, that was in organic chemistry experiment. All biology students have to take organic chemistry and physics.

Although if I could do it all over again I would have gone for chemical engineering, at least that way I'd actually have a degree that makes some decent money. Biologists get paid shit compared to chemists.

Shit, I'm doing molecular biology and I feel kinda daunted. I mean what kind of a job could a molecular biologist get?

Where do you get that idea?

Are we at the stage yet where the positivists are smashing the heads of the constructivists with their scientific apparatus? If not, please can someone give me a heads up when we get to that point? -thanks.

From the PhD marine biologists I've talked to. Oceanographers use it quite a bit, but marine biologists, not so much. Also, I'll be taking an ecological/organismal approach as opposed to a molecular approach when I do my PhD work, so that further lessens the need for calc and programming. I will, however, have to learn a ton of statistics shit.

My father is a rocket scientist.
I'm a computer scientist.  Which IMHO isn't really a science, unless you're actually studing "how computers work."  All I do is "Make them work."

I'm totally jealous that my dad gets to say "Yes it does." when people say "It doesn't take a rocket scientist..."

I have a physics degree, and am a scientist of sorts.  I did biological physics research as an undergrad, but will likely be doing condensed matter or optics for my thesis.

Wish I could be that smart, motivated and ambitious :frown: :frown:

though i dont believe the typical structure of learning is always the most efficient. I believe if you irrivocably commit yourself to 'anything' such a science field you are closing the mind to new beliefs and viewpoints. irrovocable commitment (I think) is after all positive unfaith, cause it leaves the mind no room for the imagination.

But dont take my word for it

So just because I choose to go to school to further my knowledge of subjects I like I am somehow closing my mind to new beliefs and any sort of imagination?  That's just stupid.  You sound like some new-age hippie who is just butthurt because he could understand the sciences or do well in the typical learning structure.

I'm starting a Physics & Astronomy degree in Sept. :awedance:

But I say I was a scientist by the classical definition ever since I was a kid.

Probably when I first saw Doc Brown.
