What is in a name, right?  What you do is the same whether we call it science or not.

I'm a scientist of sorts, I guess.  I pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree, anyhow.  Urban forestry.

Looking it up in dictionaries tends to yield the result that scientists are those with advanced knowledge in a scientific field, or variations on that theme.

Some mix it up with DieCommie's being active in research definition.

Which is all fine and well, but I wish there was a common term for somebody who employed Science as a life philosophy. Even before I embarked on a science degree, I tried to live my life by the scientific method, striving to accept only that which holds through rigorous investigation undertaken in a reputable manner. In many ways, Science has been my analogue to religion from an early age. I've fostered a belief that the universe is governed by laws which can be investigated and modelled. I attempt to adopt a lifestyle which incorporates only scientifically sound information while casting a dubious eye on unverified drivel. In many ways I feel this, more than any learned knowledge of quantum mechanics or electrodynamics, is what makes me -- for lack of a better word -- a scientist.

Doing a masters in chemical physics, which is really just a masters in physics with added chemistry.

I bet there's a few chemists on the site that make LSD and sell sheets of it.  Probably not to other members though.  :paranoid:

Inferior how?

One could also argue that science is a philosophy but philosophy is not a science.  :snub:

then you get back to the idea of natural philosophy, where one attempted to find truths both material and divine by closely observing and recording natural occurrences.

There's quite a few members here who have not replied to this thread, and are more than qualified to do so, though not all of them would post in the Pub...:smirk: . . . :peace:

currently studying alternative med. such as ayurvedic med. naturopathy, etc.

though i dont believe the typical structure of learning is always the most efficient. I believe if you irrivocably commit yourself to 'anything' such a science field you are closing the mind to new beliefs and viewpoints. irrovocable commitment (I think) is after all positive unfaith, cause it leaves the mind no room for the imagination.

But dont take my word for it

well i don't consider myself a scientist, though i try apply the method of thought to everything i see, and everything i do.

i have 4 semesters of geology: physical geology (identify minerals by looking at rocks), historical geology (identify age of a sample by identifying the fossil bugs, plants, or micro-organisms and relating them to the time period when they lived. think biology and botany, but for a large part of the stuff that has ever left a fossil, instead of living things), intro to hydrogeology (movement of water and finding water thru geology, lots of enviromental applications), and intro to petroleum geology (the classic find the oil and gas bit).

i have intro to biology, intro to botany, anatomy and physiology, a 6 week continuing education course towards EMS qualifications just for fun.

with all the other crap i have taken for fun, i could get a science degree of some sort probably, except math is still my achilles heel, and if you can't create an equation to describe what you are observing, and know what data to put in what slot, and how to analyze the data ...you can't do real science.

so i don't consider my self a scientist. i am also a science hobbyist.

i'm pretty  happy with that ..but i'm working on my math.
