you can't do high level geology without getting into geophysics.

even lower level geology is half REALLY old "archeology" applied to the whole planet (which has to take into account theories of star and planet formation in order to even start off on the right foot) and half chemistry/biology/botany as relates to the extinct species on the planet, which vastly outnumber the living ones.

we may drink beer and do things like name a formation "Chunky Gal Mountain" and wear redneck hats, but we are real scientists.

now psychology, sociology, and social planning...those are fuzzy as hell...

but gold isn't iron pyrite, and we know the difference.

P.S. without empirical evidence to test theory, philosophy is mental masturbation; just as science with out a guiding philosophy is soulless and sterile.....it's a dance of cooperation, not a fight for dominance.:tongue:

I was being mildly facetious but I suppose science is restricted to physics whereas philosophy can cover anything from metaphysics to how one should live one's life.

My girlfriend is a scientist (she uses my account instead of making her own because some people can help but send pictures of there dicks to any female on here) she has a B.S. in biochemistry from university of Wisconsin and is doing lab work and a good university now.

There's a philosophical school of thought that since physics, as an evolution of philosophy, has made most philosophy essentially obsolete, the only subject really worthwhile pursuing in philosophy is the philosophy of language. :shrug:

Yeah but that's just because the Analytic-tradition philosophers are too pansy to try tackling the big questions in ethics.

Soon finished a Master Degree in Mechanical Engeneering :laugh: Maybe top it of with a Ph.D.

What qualifies you as a scientist?
Someone who uses the scientific process?
Someone who has expert knowledge in a specified field of science?
Someone who has a degree from a university?

I'd like to consider myself a scientist of sorts, but I do not publish papers, and I have no degree. :crazy:

Thats a good question.  There is a broad definition that could include nearly anything, trekie takes cooking to a science.  You can turn any endeavor into a 'science' by systematizing it.

I usually adopt a very strict definition.  Science is about creating qualitative and quantitative models that can describe and predict observations.  A scientist is a person involved in that process by creating the models or creating experimental tests and interpreting the results.  I take the 'creating' part to be vital to the definition.  If you are an assistant calibrating lasers or operating a distillation apparatus you are a technician and not a scientist, since you are not engaged in creative activity.  By this strict definition I have trouble calling myself a scientist even though I do have a degree and do work on publishable research. 

Of course alot of people dont like this definition because they like to call themselves scientists even if they are just studying what others have already done.  Ive seen engineers call themselves scientists, mathematicians call themselves scientists - even nurses.  It seems there is alot of self esteem tied up in the label.

Its like any other profession really.  There are baseball players and there are Baseball players.  There are computer programmers and there are Computer Programmers.
