buy a 49 cent box of brown rice, through it in a blender for 5 minutes and there you go.. rice flour. thanx for the info on the way the substrate looks. (i blended 1/3 a cup of rice for maybe 4 minutes... it fluffed up to 1/2 a cup even when i packed it down...)

When I make flour I use a sifter to keep all of the big chunks from going into the jars. The big chunks are more easily contaminated especially if you are not using a pressure cooker.

you could mix b.r.f. in a bag by shaking it that mixes it well

Hey Joe, Don't trip man I'm in the same spot you are. I just inocculated my cakes yesterday. My substrate mix also looked pretty white and clumpy. I think that's how it's supposed to be. I bought my rice flour and it already was white, not brown. I even asked the guy,Is this BROWN rice flour or white? Great, i'm glad they aren't supposed to look like the pictures... it had me really worried. they should make it more clear to us newbies so we know what we are dealing with

The FP-tek innoculation photos at www.fanaticus.com show a jar filled only with dry vermiculite. Yes, grinded brown rice looks white.
If you want to prevent clumping of the substrate, first put the measured vermiculite to a bowl, add water, mix, and add the rice flour last, mixing it thoroughly.
This way the substrate is going to be very homogenous.
