Baking Vermiculite & Brown Rice Flour.....
    #1172894 -

I know that some people reccommend baking the vermiculite and brown rice flour before putting them in the jars for extra sterility. How long should I bake them for and at what temperature? Should I mix them together or bake them separately? Thanks.

i've never heard anyone recommend that. it seems pointless to me. it will get sterile without doing it, so why do it? it's sterile or it's not sterile, there is no "extra sterility".

All I know is that the last time I did this none of my jars were contaminated. I tihnk that the idea is to have all the vermiculite/brown rice heated evenly, whereas when you boil the jars the substrate in the middle isn't heated as much as the substrate near the sides. it's been awhile and I can't remember how long i put them in the oven for. if you can help me with that i would appreciate it. thanks.

i have never heard of anyone doing this and most people don't get contams without doing it. plus heating in the oven will screw with your moisture content. and if your jars aren't heated enough in the middle then they haven't been cooked long enough.

trying to get a consensus on what almost no one does will be difficult. i've heard of baking your casing layer and i've heard of oven tek for sterilizing, but using oven AND steaming is way overkill, imho. best to just make the recipe correctly and sterilize once than to mess around and potentially screw up your water ratios.

The last time I sterilized my jars I wore a red shirt and none of them contaminated. Does that mean that the red shirt contributed to my success?

Baking your substrate prior to boiling is an unnecessary extra step.

there is absolutley no point in doing that unless you like wasting time. if its sterile then its sterile, you cant get extra sterile.

yeah, don't bake them! Baking can distort the nutritional value in the BRF that the fungus needs.
