When you use coffee in spawn it can be freshly ground. When you use coffee in a bulk substrate, make sure it has been used to make coffee before you use it (or leach it by simmering in a pot of water, then draining). It needs to be leached for use in a substrate because it would otherwise be very prone to contamination; coffee water is very nutritious.

Other than that, you just add it to the rest of the ingredients just like anything else. The amount to use is up to the individual; search around and see who's grow you would like to emulate and choose that amount, or do your own experimentation.

thanks necco. i am just trying to find out the general success rate of coffe because people seem to get alot of contams. Drumma seemd to have been succesful in every way from his monotub so i was jus wondering how he prepared the coffee because thats the only thing confuzing me right now and i am prety much doing the same thing as him.

drumma how did you EXACTLY prepare your cofee grounds?? pasterize, straight from the coffee maker, pc????? your success will clear things up for me and many other nooobs

Well I actually didn't do much. I had started keeping my coffee grounds a few weeks before I planned to make the tub. I would make my coffee in the morning and then take the grounds and dump them into a shallow plate/bowl with a small fan blowing across the top of them. This allowed them to dry out quickly. Each day I would just dump the grounds from that day onto the pile. When i got home form work I would stir it all up just to make sure it was all exposed to air and no moist spots on the bottom. 

As for pasteurization... I basically followed this tek except that I don't put the verm, coffe, and gypsum into the pot with boiling water and coir. I just expand the coir and then dump it into a 5 gallon bucket. Then I add my coffee, verm and gypsum and stir it up with a big wooden spoon. I cover it with aluminum foil and let it sit over night.
It stays really hot for a long time so I figure that is doing a good enough job of pasteurizing everything. However I could have just gotten lucky. I'll follow the same steps next time and document what happens.

and don't worry about you're beat up substrate
