First gypsum I bought was a 2 oz. bottle from a brew supply for 5 bucks- fine for some jars, but I found a 40 lb sack from a nursery for 7 bucks. I've found no need to grind the pellets, just add it to boiling water and it dissolves. You then just add it in to whatever procedure you're doing. Check locally owned nurseries and garden centers. I know you said "small quantities", but it's useful in substrates at larger amounts, and with luck, you can find it quite cheap. Keep looking!

Dont use drywall that has colored paper. Blue, green and purple paper have bad stuff in them. You want the light gray, buff or light brown paper color, its good.
