Do you think that addiction is acceptable if you are responsible about it?
    #11898957 -

As long as it is not effecting your family, your job, your way of life...

is addicton okay?

I kind of think it IS. I know this guy who smokes pot every day (compulsively), and drinks beer at least 3 times a weeks. I would consider his behavior addictive. (he essentially never goes a day without smoking). Yet he has his life on track, he is bettering himself, graduating college this semester and has been visiting law schools because he is going to be a lawyer. He is also studying for the L-Sat. He is also on the deans list for academic achievment, and is on academic scholarship. He is not on a downward spiral, he has tried other drugs, including psychedelics, but only abuses THC. (i wouldn't really call his alcohol use "abuse" because he drinks beer mainly for the taste)

I really think that the media MUST make a distinction between normal drug use and damaging drug abuse. Unless they do this, they are NEVER going to win over the destructive addict. They must frame it in terms of how the drugs effect each individual persons belief system. And explain in real terms why this is bad. Because I can tell you, being able to shoot up heroin every day for the rest of my life is a lot more appealing than having to work hard and be responsible.

currently They frame it in terms of "its going to kill you"! "its a disease!" blah blah blah. This doesn't appeal to an addict, in my eyes 3 years of daily heroin use would be more fullfilling than a long life of no drug use whatsoever. They must understand that drugs make you FEEL GOOD, not bad, hard work and responsibility make you feel bad....

Addiction is only a problem if you start to choose the drug or whatever over more important things, such as having food and shelter and family. Everyone is addicted to something, some just get into worse things then others.

Someone who is emotionally and mentally healthy won't feel bad because of hard work and responsiblity. Hard work is fullfilling, and responsibilty is rewarding.

To answer your question though, I don't think you can be responsible about drug use if you are addicted. By definition, when you are addicted you have a need to use that is stronger than important things in your life.

The challenge here is that most likely getting and smoking weed is so easy for your friend that is doesn't seem a problem to him He can always smoke if he wants and can still meet responsibilties. But what happens when he has to choose? Can he go a couple weeks without to pass a drug test for that law firm? Or will he choose to smoke and take a lesser job instead? Will he even get that far, or will he not do well enough in college because he smoked instead of studying?

For the record, I do use drugs, but not often. I enjoy them but I'm not addicted. I don't judge anyone on drug use. I have many friends who thought the same as you and are now "happy" to sit at home unemployed, with life crashing around them as long as they are high. If they aren't high they feel bad because of the bills, hard work that isn't done, and the responsiblitys. Then they get high again to "relax."

If you really are addicted, that is the *only* outcome. You may have goals and dreams now, but at some point you will choose the addiction over your goals. The need to choose may not have come up yet, but it will. If you can stop at anytime in order to fullfill your responsibilies, then you aren't addicted after all.

I'm mixed. Fair play if you can keep it from affecting your daily life, but you're still dependent on something (weather mental or physical, good or bad) and to me PERSONALLY, I see that as a weakness.

Mind you, who wouldn't want to 'be' somewhere else with the state of things at the moment?

By definition, an addiction is not responsible.

I smoke every day (or very nearly), but I wouldn't consider myself addicted. I can (and do) stop easily whenever I need to- and that's why my use is responsible. If I wasn't able to stop when my usage was becoming a problem, I would be an addict.

There are plenty of functional addicts, though.

I vaporize 2-3 grams of herb per day but I grow

you could call me a marijuana addict, but I'd laugh at you

Addiction is fine unless it takes over and you can't be responsible about things anymore.

I'm a marijuana smoker myself but i am recently cutting down a lot so i can be more clear headed...

when it comes to the herb i think everyone's situation is very subjective to the individual but i can say without a doubt that i know a few people that are content with being 25 and living in their parents house with a minimum wage supermarket job as long as they can toke bong hits...      it can be argued that people in that situation would be doing the same thing with or without weed and i guess it's their right, but i personally would hope i can accomplish something over the course of the next few years, but im still living at home so i cant talk so big.

I saw a South Park last night that basically summed up the idea that marijuana is harmless but often times, tokers/drug uzers will spend most their free time blazing instead of working to be good at something or studying...

From my experience,  opiate addiction never seems to lead to much good unless you spend those years being a musician/artist or just want to live in opiate land before it kills you, but i don't think you end off in a better place when you stop using ...

I've seen alcoholics before that seem to enjoy themselves, but i don't kno what would happen if you took away their alcohol//

At the end of the day its all subjective to the user and drug obviously... but i don't discriminate against any users , unless they are douchebag types  :leaf:  and if you can function good and afford to use drugz everday, then why  not?

Moderation is key. Codependency is another guise of addiction. Not only does that apply to drugs but to relationships as well. Codependent people cannot rationalize life after substance or relationship abuse. If codependency vanishes the relationship between the substance and relationships can deteriorate quickly. If not counseled or intervened properly the codependent person will find other ways to cope. Substituting that missing "hole" for something else. Clingy personality traits or fear of being alone etc...suffer most from a lapse in addictive behaviors. There are however drugs that are addictive in nature that can grip the most independent of personalities, slowly conforming those to a codependent state. Heroin, cocaine or cigarettes to name a few. Classic examples are women looking for a father figure to marry or man looking for a mother figure. Etc. Do I believe in any of it? Some of it, but I try to choose what controls me 90% of the time, with 10% of the other, out of my control. Something to ponder:...Do I really control anything at all or is it a devious perception? There isn't a set, clinical definition of "addiction", although most consider it to include maladaptive, or "bad" behaviors that affect your life to a significant degree.

Thus, by definition, living responsibly isn't "addiction".

I would say that you are addicted to a substance when you have difficulty stopping using it; your desires override rationality.

imo if you can support your habit and you are not causing any harm to others then addiction is perfectly acceptable.

Yup. There's a big difference between functional and addicted. If you are addicted, you let the addiction take over.
Quote:

If you have a chance to talk to a recovered alcoholic in AA- There are problem drinkers and alcoholics. It's hard to tell the difference unless you know them really well. They both drink too much, and both may have bad consequences from drinking. But, the problem drinker doesn't have the uncontrollable need to keep drinking. He/She drinks because they like it. The alcoholic has a chemical need for the drug (alcohol) and can not stop no matter how hard they try.

It's the same thing with any drug. If you are addicted, you can't be responsible because the chemical need will take over. This is true even for caffeine and cigarettes. I can't count how many times I'm working with a group at work, just getting things going, and we break for a smoking break. Only to kill the momentum and ultimately to not complete the project on time. Or co-workers who show up late for work every day with a cup from Starbucks. Feeding the addiction becomes more important than taking care of important responsibilities.

As the bizzle said, if it isn't addiction you being responsible, it isn't an addiction, and you should have no problem stopping.

I'm guessing that your friend is being harassed about smoking and wants to be told he is right, the people harassing him are wrong, and it is OK to continue smoking. Why not stop for a month, prove it isn't an addiction, prove that he can stop and take care of responsibilities when needed, and then if he wants start smoking again?
