personally the only problem with addiction i've had to face is alcohol. literally drinking a 1/5 of vodka to myself and nobody even knows the extent of the addiction except me and the cashiers at the liquor stores. personally i hate the person i become when i drink, its like doctor jeckle and mr hyde or something. of course having an alcoholic family tree they say has something to do with it. everybody on 1 side of my family has a problem with addictive behavior.
i've gotten to the point where i can't even have 1 drink and not go overboard and become a complete lush. of course i've only really come to terms with all this in the past year and everyday is a struggle to try to stay sober. im thinking about trying AA tonight, but theres something i dont like about AA. i had to go there because of a DUI about 6 years ago and couldn't stand sitting around talking about how much you loved booz and constantly going over how it ruined your life every week with this group of strangers.
i just finally feel normal again today after coming off a 1 week binge again  :frown: its like a never ending cycle i can't break out of. i know i'm definitely OCD so i hope to just focus on other things like food, work and working out and forget about drinking, even though life can be a little boring sober :frown:

so i personally think genetics do play a part. i have been able to kick habits for about 1 week at a time, then completely revert back to the old behavior. the hard part is staying with it over long periods of time.

I've never had a problem with addiction, but when I stop using a substance that I had been using for a while, I usually go through a period of depression. Meh.

Never smoked a cigarette, though, and (probably) never will.

Do you ever just make up your mind to go on the wagon every so often? That's what I do and it works for me. Like deciding I won't drink for two weeks straight, or drink only on the weekends.. Whatever your plan is you feel so much better when you do it successfully, like you are in control of your drinking not the other way around.

I just started a one month period where I won't allow myself to drink. It's the longest I've gone in a long time but I psyched myself up for it!

Nobody really wants to drink and drink until.. :puke:

Hmm, never really skimmed over the thread yet.. but I don't think that it's a personality trait so much as just being synonomous with lazy or weak people. Just my two cents. I've thought about this at times..
