Addiction...is it a personality trait?
    #2923873 - 07/24/04 05:34 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Just wondering why some people are easily addicted to substances while others exhibit very little addictive traits. Is it a genetic thing? Is it simply strength of character?

I was just thinking about it this week because I am giving my body a bit of a rest from the normal abuse I give it. I decided to change my eating habits (I was eating too much, and mostly crappy foods), not smoke for a bit, lay off the alcohol, etc.

I have never had a problem in my life adjusting my habits. I have never felt as though I had an "addiction" to anything. I realized I haven't had a cigarette for a week and hardly thought about it. I haven't been drinking my morning coffee and it doesn't seem to matter. I've eaten healthy for the last week and cut out snacks and junk-food entirely w/o any effort. I just don't see how some people find it so difficult to just say "No, I'm not gonna eat/drink/smoke/do that."

Does anyone else understand how I feel? It seems so simple to adjust my lifestyle. In fact, I do it occasionaly just becuase I feel like it. I see people freaking out jonesing for a cigarette or bitching how they feel so shitty cause they didn't have a cup of coffee in the morning. Whats the big fucking deal?! Just go about your day and quit fucking worrying about it!

Maybe its because I don't think of things in long-term, permanent, endless goals that I will battle for the rest of my life. I know I will pick up a pack of cigs in another month and be smoking again. But I will do it because I enjoy it, not because I feel I have to. And isn't it strange that I don't ever feel a craving for one in the meantime?

I just feel sorry for those who have little control over thier addictions. I have good friends who have serious addictions and I just feel pity for them when I see them struggling (and often failing) to control themselves. I sure am glad I don't have to feel that way!!

Astrologically, Pisceans and Capricorns are the personalities that have the most problems with addictions.

I personally have a *very* addictive personality. Maybe it's just weak will or stomach or immune system or something, I don't really know...

But I've become addicted to crisps, coke, tea, coffee, Cheese Ploughman's sandwiches [this was one of my worst and most expensive addictions!], water, chocolate, Lemon Fanta, alcohol, wearing a hat, there are probably many more that I can't remember.

Okay, so they weren't terribly hard addictions to beat, but still ... I wasted like ?100 at least on Cheese Ploughman's last term at Uni.

I know how you feel. I even tried smoking to see if i got addicted. It gave me a buzz, but nothing to be "jonsing" about or whatever. I haven't encountered heroin or anything that's supposedly truly addicting and wonderful, so i don't know how i'd fair with that.

The best thought i can give is how i think about smoking weed. I really like smoking, and don't see why stopping would be any better. I don't NEED to smoke it, but i'd really like to. I've even thought about stopping for a while just if i could, but then i think "hey, I could get high right now"...

 maybe i am addicted.

Get a copy of the book  Mind Matters, and read the chapter on addiction. (lots of science)

In a nutshell....While physical addiction does exist , mental emotional addiction is what makes all the difference.

Study after study shows....that people dont quit when they are , told to, OD, get jacked , or lose a friend to drugs......

They quit when they make a choice... when THEY DECIDE.

Thats what works....., Will

I think its probably a little of both. Some people don't really exercise self discipline and they have problems getting hooked to anything they like whether its a drug or talking on the phone. The extreme end of the spectrum is people with OCD.

Also everybody's biochemical makeup is different. A substance that affects me strongly might have little effect upon you.

The only thing I've ever had trouble with is alcohol. Recently I started limiting my drinking to just weekends. Before I would drink four or five times a week. The first day or two was sort of hard- after that no problem!

I tend to believe it is a genetic thing. Some people have a really easy time saying no to things, and there are some of us who "can't". I get addicted very easily myself with impulsive behavior egging it on.

I'm the type of person that enjoys getting addicted to things. Subconsciously, it's true, even though I don't like to admit it. For some reason, I feel more "in control" when I get addicted to something, more "full of life," even though the opposite it obviously true!!

I don't know...I can't explain it.

For me, it's a matter of mind over matter, but it's hard to convince myself that it's not good to be addicted to things.

The compulsion for addiction comes from wanting to go ALL OUT with whatever I'm doing. Every single time I get a new hobby, I spent hundreds of dollars on it, become obsessed with it, can't stop doing or thinking it etc. I think that is part of my addiction potential...my tendency to obsess over things.

Luckily, I'm not really obsessed with anyting right now, besides writing and stuff. I'm drunk right now too, so this might be garbled

As do I, to an extent. Alcoholism in families is well documented, but there's also a mental/emotional factor as well, I believe.

I'm capricorn and I have zero problem with addiction. IMO astrology is just for fun, nothing more.

I am Pisces, I am also Irish from a good Irish alcoholic family maternally, and my father was a good German alcoholic. With these credentials I too should have some kind of addiction problem, but I don't.

As I am sure you know TTS, oDin and I have had this conversation many times, wondering why we have not gone by the addiction wayside. As with life I think the general answer is ... D. All of the Above. I think addictive personalities can be genetic, but mostly behavioral. I think even if he cards are stacked against you biologically, physiologically, astrologically etc I think if you recognize your potential risk, make rules for yourself, NEVER break them, and challenge your behavior and take breaks from the potentially hazardous activity or never go down that path you will have a better chance of staying in the drivers seat in your life.

As most of you know I enjoy the gange, however, I take breaks, occasionally, just to change my behavior occasionally. I take myself out of the routine of my behavioral smoking, just for some reality checks.

I think there are people who have more addictive personalities, however, I think that there is the option of free will that sometimes is not engaged when it should be.

I will never consider my chocolate ice cream love as anything more than that.... love!
