The problem with "morals"
    #11877182 -

Is that people have differing moral codes based on different things.

Lets look at some examples.

Euthinasia. Some feel that it's immoral to allow another human being to suffer. Some feel that it's immoral to kill anyone who is not trying to harm you.

Infidelity. While most people would agree cheating is wrong, it's been advocated on this site, that morality should dictate that it become illegal to cheat. Personally, I think it's immoral to create laws that govern behavior where no one is physically harmed.

Self defense. Some people think violence of any kind is immoral. Other, more intelligent people, believe that it's perfectly moral to defend one's self against crime.

Charity. Some people feel it's immoral to let a homeless person starve, while others feel that it's immoral to give a hand out without a hand up.

Yet there are people here that would just as soon create laws based on "morals" that govern our behavior and liberties. Many call those people conservatives and support them Yet if someone wants to creat laws that govern our behavior, in order to help the "common good", we call them a liberal and condemn them.

One is no better than the other. Take your morals and shove them up a goats ass.

Morals aren't laws. You aren't going t lose anything by not following them. They're more set as a basis for people to judge you by.

Meh examples. Read up on some of the essential streams in philosophy and see what paradoxes/choices lie behind them. You're onto something though

Just because there are differing opinions as to what's moral and what's not does not mean that an objective system of morality doesn't exist.

Also, Philosophy, Sociology and Psychology would be a better forum to discuss this.

I do agree that morals are largely subjective.

But, some peoples' code of ethics might permit them to kill whoever they wanted, for fun.

OP, while you make some valid points...do you have children? How are you going to teach them that if they punch the wrong pregnant woman in the stomach, they might get thrown off a balcony? (random extreme example)

Morality is not objective at all.

Objective morality is an oxymoron. Unless you happen to be one of those religious types that believes that the big man in the sky is judging your actions to decide whether or not you get to go to heaven..

Everyone's morality is a direct result of their environment IMO. Maybe some genetics is involved but for the most part you are a conditioned product of your surroundings. And judging other people's behaviour to be right or wrong is a failure to realize this simple fact.

That depends on what philosophy you follow. This may be true for you, but it isn't true for me.

How about female genital mutilation?

I'd also like to add this lovely beauty

"The worst of it is that subjectivism is not just an inconsequential intellectual flourish or badge of theoretical chic. It is used to deflect argument, or to belittle the pretensions of the arguments of others. Claims that something is without relativistic qualifications true or false, right or wrong, good or bad, risk being derided as expressions of a parochial perspective or form of life - not as a preliminary to showing that they are mistaken whereas something else is right, but as a way of showing that nothing is right and that instead we are all expressing our personal or cultural points of view. The actual result has been a growth in the already extreme intellectual laziness of contemporary culture and the collapse of serious argument throughout the lower reaches of the humanities and social sciences, together with a refusal to take seriously, as anything other than first-person avowals, the objective arguments of others. . . ."

Its the age old question of individual morality vs universal morality.
I do think think that many, if not most behaviors or traditions are individualistic by nature, with no truly objective measurement of their right or wrongness.
The problem is, that anyone who thinks that morals are purely individualistic, would have to be a moralistic nihilist. In which case no action would be more right or wrong than any other action.

Huh?  You may believe or disbelieve in an objective morality but that doesn't change the fact that it's an invalid implication from the existence of differing moral opinions to the nonexistence of an objective morality.

So, you're saying that despite morality being an entirely human construct, there may be some infallible, objective code of morality out there that hasn't been discovered yet?  :what:

I'm saying that's an invalid way to prove that it doesn't exist.

More to the point I don't believe in an objective morality as mandated by God but I do believe that it's theoretically possible to rationally construct an intersubjective morality that members of a society can agree to.

Quote:
morality being an entirely human construct

that is subjective

Sure, I guess ultimately, one might discover that they have the power to do anything at all that they want without any sort of moral consequence, but I guess, in my human construct, I believe that there is a thing called life, which cannot be experienced to the most euphoric degree without a connection to the way it really works, independent of human interpretation. I'm having trouble explaining, but it's the difference between "feels good, man", and "feels WAY BEYOND good, man." You don't have to feel THAT good if you don't want to, but for some reason I see it as pretty much the meaning of life, for lack of better words atm
