Re: How long does it take a pressure cooker to reach 15 psi? [Re: CaptainAhab]

i would wait till morning
it takes some time for those jars to completely cool down

just leave them in the PC until all the way cool

I've got to make 20 jars, so I just finished the first ten and then loaded the next 10. I stay up late so I might be able to pull this off when it gets later, probably around 1:30 am or 1am... it's 7 now, so I hope that's enough time

you want them to cool down slowly
cause when they do they suck cooler air in thru the filter
leaving them in the PC to cool reduces the risk of any
contams making it past your filter and in to your jars

Wut? Hasn't even been 90 minutes yet. How are you onto the next batch?

it was 90 minutes, unless my kitchen timer lied to me. I thought that it had been? lemme check the first time post
and damn, it's too late, I already took them out. I'll go put more micropore on if need be, what say you?

If you released pressure to get the jars out early, you've probably ruined that batch.  You're supposed to let the PC cool slowly to near room temp before opening.  Being in a hurry and growing mushrooms are mutually exclusive.

Depended how much volume is in the PC. Go figure more crap in it takes less time. But that is common sense given physic's.

Can someone explain the reasoning behind letting the pressure valve vent for a few minutes before putting the weight on. I've always just left the valve on from the start and never had any problems?

Also most of the time I will manually help the cooker along in loosing pressure by slowly letting steam out every so often.

you run the risk of throwing off your moisture content
and over cooking your grains causing a lot more
of the kernels to burst

this can also lead to contams
i wouldnt suggest it

hmm... I'll see if the 10 jars I just did contaminate then, I suppose. I've got 10 more coming, anyways. No problemo. Grain is cheap.

well when I manually let pressure out of the PC it's usually because I know I didn't dry the grains quite enough before sterilizing them. so I let pressure out of the pot to pull some moisture out of the jars.. I t seems to work for me.

you're saying you've let the pressure out and taken the jars out of the pc when they're not done cooling? I'm just a little afraid of contams

Re: How long does it take a pressure cooker to reach 15 psi? [Re: fungisfarmer]
    #11804926 -

that can also lead to burst kernels
when you release pressure rapidly like that
it causes the water in the PC to violently boil
and moisture to rapidly escape whatever you have in it

i wouldnt make a habit out of it
just PC at night before you go to bed
and inoculate in the morning.
