How long does it take a pressure cooker to reach 15 psi?
    #11803630 -

I'm wondering if my gauge is defective... it's been on the stove past the point where steam is escaping the port for 5 minutes now with the weight on. Any ideas?

Oh, good point. I'd trust the jiggler more than the gauge. Or tape a coin of top of the jiggler to make them match.

It's a 23 quart monster from Walmart made by presto. Check it out here: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2625289&findingMethod=rr
It's still sitting at 0 psi. pbbt

Did the button pop up? If not, hold it down then release it.

how full is it?
the more it has in it the longer it takes

how long has your air vent/cover lock been up for
(thats the silver thing in front of the gauge)

is your weight on or off the vent pipe

The silver valve that pops up popped up about 5 minutes ago and is sitting in place (pushed up). It's got 10 jars in it, and about 2-3 inches of water on the bottom of the tank. The weight is on the vent pipe.

it's up to 4 psi, now. I hear a small amount of air leaking from under the weight. I don't start the 90 minute timer yet, do I? It's been on the stove for about 25 minutes, now.

put it on 10(high)
once you hit 15psi turn it down so your weight doesnt rattle

Is it possible something is blocking the gauge stem? Piece of foil, maybe?

Don't start the timer until  after you get to 15, and turn the heat down.
Once you get the lowest temp you can and still maintain heat- start the timer.

nice. that's doing the trick. It's climbing so that I can see the needle in the gauge moving, and hitting 11 or so.

Why would you say that?  Always put the stove on high to bring the PC up to pressure.  The stove setting is reduced once pressure is reached.

Be sure to let steam vent for a few minutes before putting the weight on to build pressure.

Everything is going great. This is an exciting time for me... the first time doing it! I should be able to inoculate tonight when the grains cool a bit. Can I inoculate when it's still warm? Thanks again, everyone
