Pressure Cooker

Well I ordered a pressure cooker off of Ebay and it finally came. It's a presto four quart. Now I need to figure out how to use the damn thing since it didn't come with instructions. I gave it a test run today, I put it on high on a stove burner with some water in it and it sarted steaming out of the top. Is this normal? Can anyone post a quick overview on how I steralize jars with this (i.e. burner temp, amount of water, time duration, etc...)? Thanks, I've tried searching the net but with no results. Included below is a picture of the cooker if it helps.

I dont know much about pressure cookers, but if steam is escaping, it probably needs a new seal. Which I've head are easy to find, and are not expensive. I have also head something about putting a little cooking oil around the seal, but like I said I dont know much about pressure cookers.
Also, isnt there supposed to be some kind of pressure guage? How are you going to tell when you reached 15 PSI?

Put about an inch of water in cooker....make sure there is a metal plate on the bottom or if it's missing, use a rag.
Load with jars, you will probably fit 7, Turn on high. After a few minutes you'll hear the hissing, the weight will be jiggling and the pressure will be about...I'm not sure, those models don't have a guage. But even if the seal is bad and there steam escaping from around the edges, there is still pressure inside. The water will run out faster, watch for an end to escaping steam! Even with escaping steam, 15-20 minutes is long enough.
You can also cook vegetables..would you like some recipes?

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed. When I said the steam was coming out I meant it was coming out of the weight, not the edges, so that's normal right?

I'll give you the directions mine came with.... it has a weight also... and I think keeps things at 10 psi. I figure an hour should do the trick.
make sure jars are not directly on the bottom...mine came with a little insert. but you can use a towell.
fill with water untill half or a little below half up the sides of the jars.
turn burner on high.....untill weight begins to release steam and jiggles... Then turn the heat down untill the weight on top rocks gently then start your timer for an hour.
Hope this helps
Peace

Oooooh. I wasn't sure about that pressure guage, but I know now, when you said "weight". It's the same principle as a spring loaded valve.

Hmm is it possible to over cook the jars in a pressure cooker? Because I read in guides you cook for 20 minutes but you're saying an hour.

Everybody has recommended an hour for mine because it only keeps pressure at 10 psi's...... Most grow guides tell you to steam them for 20-30 minutes at 15 psi's.
Most of the steamers without gauges, keep the Psi's at 10
