I have pres. cooker of 10 psi not 15, cook longer?
    #548958 - 02/12/02 03:12 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I noticed this PC is 10 psi. This may be the cause for some of my more usual bad contaminations. I know its not the requirement. But I was wondering if it would be better if I just cooked an extra 30min to an hour just so that I can be sure that all the contaim are dead. Is this going to work?

Hi,
I have a 10 psi pressure cooker (4.2 qt. from Wal-Mart), it has the "wobbler" on top, and I cook jars for 45 minutes AFTER the ten-minute interlude where the steam is blown out. I'm not an "old hand" but I've only had 1 contaminated jar so far. I think the pressure cooker works great, and it being only 10 psi doesn't mean too much, lots of old, leaky pressure cookers don't reach 15 psi and they still work fine to sterilize. So I guess 45min- 1 hour would probably be best amount of time to cook jars for.

your pressure cooker may only read up to 10 psi, but it most likely does get to a higher pressure if you keep your stove cranked up for a while with the wobbler (or whatever that steam plus thing is called) has been on the whole time and allows the pressure to build. im not recommending you let the pressure build so much that you blow the thing open, but i am positive the pressure must get higher than 10psi. it is basic science, ya know?

No, that won't work! You cannot keep enough water INSIDE the cooker if you continually blow steam out the wobbler. The cooker is NOT designed to work that way and you will end up cracking the jars! The PC is designed to blow steam for 10 mins on high then get turned down to low. Cooking longer is safer than cokking higher, please be safe!

sillvyr is right about the safety issue. i am just impatient and havent had any problems with my style cooking, yet. if you cant get the psi up, take it like sex....longer is better.

How much water should I put in the 4.2 qt PC? it only goes to 10 psi, and if I'm cooking for 1 hour, won't I need extra water so it does'nt all steam away?

You should fill the pressure cooker up to the half way mark on the jars.

You will have enough water......for a hour.
