oh man.. that one's like 550-600 brand new.  i'm in no hurry though.  hell i've still got six or seven months of traveling left ahead of me before i even make it back to the states, let alone get settled in with a job and a place.  but imma start keeping an eye out and pawn shops once i get back to see if i can spot a deal.  it'd be friggin awesome to find an older 39A  mountie or 552 speedmaster in decent condition for under 300.

For a good gun 600 isn't a lot. Yes it's expensive but saving some $ and searching for good deals will pay you back.

Besides, this is surviving the zombie apocalypse we are talking about. You can't put a price tag on that.

well when i really don't need to be buying frivolous things because i'm unemployed, flat broke and needing to pay off student loans; 600 is quite a bit.  that's why i was considering the super cheap ones, like on of the first three.  can all be had for under 150, so it'd just be cheap fun that could still bag a rabbit for dinner...  but probably couldn't take down a zombie at 75yrds.

I suggest melee weapon training. This allows you to be prepaired even without a gun.

i have actually been getting some semblance of melee weapons training via farmwork.  i've been using axes and hatchets a fair amount these days, splitting wood and kindling and the like.  so i'm get a stronger, more controlled swing, which is definitely good.

i've also got several years experience in grappling martial arts [folk-style wrestling and some judo], so that would also come in quite handy in escaping the grasp of the offending zombie, should he happen to, god forbid, actually get a hold on me.  i imagine zombies aren't too intuitive with their weight distribution, which would make it relatively easy to throw them off balance to give you time to get out of holding distance.  balance and weight distribution were always my stronger points that came rather naturally to me, so i could work with that.

The only weapon I have is a gas powered pellet gun.

I was so dissapointed with RE5, I really wish they would bring back the style of RE 1-3.

It's a good game hardly anything more than the title is Resident Evil about it though. I grew up playing the shit out of 1, 2 and 3 though so I'm probably biased.

id go with some form of semi automatic rifle. maybe just an ak actually, using semi fire, id imagine 7.62 would kill any zombie. and for melee, id go with two hatchets.
