i want to start downloading movies tonight and i would like to put together a collection of AMAZING zombie movies. i have a few in mind, but what are some of the best you have seen?

there are the obvious ones like Night of the Living Dead or the original Dawn of the Dead...
if you want a few more unusual ones you could check out these..
Pontypool (probably my fav zombie movie):
you wont like Pontypool if you want a traditional zombie movie with some action and everything spelled out for you.. this is slow, minimalistic, and suspenseful.

Definitely DL the original Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead, and I suggest Return of the Living Dead if you want a little humor with your horror (the second one is pretty good too, but they go downhill after that.
Have you seen any of the new AMC series The Walking Dead? That's a damn good series.

thanks for all the replies. ill check em out tonight. i did notice that no one mentioned any of the newer movies. i thought 28 days/ weeks later was pretty good. i know it steps away from the traditional slow paced zombie, but the shit is still pretty epic.

now this isn't my list. its from a book i have called "zombie movies:the ultimate guide" it was written in 2008, so zombieland isn't in it, along with quarantine, and a few other older ones. on the whole though, its a very comprehensive guide to the vast majority of all the zombie movies made up until 08. i definitely recommend it to all fans of zombie movies. theres reasons listed why each of the above movies are on the list, i just didn't feel like typing them out. it reviews and rates nearly 300 zombie flicks. but ya anyway those are pretty much the best ones. i have seen most of them and can back up the ratings.

well first off this is a pretty damn bad film. its pretty much only worth watching IMO to say you saw it and if you appreciate laughing at bad movies. if you do, you should definitely watch some movies made by Troma. they put out a few zombie ones.
but back on point - no its not a typical hollywood zombie film, but it does deal with the resurrection of the dead, so yes it is a zombie flick.

As I have stated before, 28 days later is a complete masterpiece, 28 weeks later is a complete failure. 
Shaun of the Dead and Fido are both good.
Dawn of the dead was also great.
Is Evil Dead considered a Zombie flick? I know I have seen it labeled that but I am not sure i get it.

OP and anyone else: if your looking for any more good, or bad, zombie flicks just let me know. im more than happy to share the info in the aforementioned book as well as my own personal zombie knowledge. id like to think im somewhat of a zombie aficionado.
now that i think about it, perhaps some of the resident evil movies should be on that list...
Evil Dead isn't strictly a zombie movie as there are no reanimated dead in it, but rather demonic forces or w/e. but it is in the zombie movie book under "zombieless zombie movies." so no, but yes.

i dont know.. technically you could say that movies where the main cause of the zombies is an infection they dont necessarily die before becoming a zombie.. they lose their humanity. kinda like I Am Legend or Omega Man or The Last Man on Earth.. theyre all considered zombie movies but you dont have to die to be transformed, therefor, their arent any reanimated corpses.
i guess my point is that i dont think reanimated corpses are the only definition of a zombie..
id say the Evil Dead is a zombie movie.
EDIT: the original Dawn of the Dead is really where the only explanation is simple, pure reanimation. there is no infection or any reason really.. the only information given is "When theres no more room in hell the dead will walk the earth."
beyond that there is nothing..
thats the most pure zombie movie in my opinion.

frith you make a good point. alot of zombie flicks dont deal with the reanimated dead. i was kinda just quoting the book there. the first ones had had the hatian voodoo zombies (like White Zombie) where the person was drugged, appeared to die, then was dug up after. they never really died though.
i haven't checked this fully yet, but i believe most romero films use the simple reanimation without explanation formula. or at least most of the early ones. i know the original night of the living dead doesn't really offer any explanation either. if a person died, they just rose and searched for flesh. ill check on that though and report back.
id still say though that evil dead isnt strictly a zombie movie, though it could fit into the category. the dead are very zombie like, but they are called possessed and there is alot of evil spirit magic type stuff. could be seen either way though.

Not to derail the thread, but has anyone here ever seen Astro-zombies? I bought a VHS bootleg at a fleamarket a while back, and being a horror junkie/recognizing the title from The Misfits, decided to buy it.

i just saw the trailer for REC and REC 2. they both look pretty damn good. reminded me of Quarantine though, but better.

Quarantine is a remake of REC.

if your looking for the apocalypse style ones, which i assume you are, you can probably ditch re-animator, the serpent and the rainbow, white zombie (still a classic tho), the walking dead, i walked with a zombie, plan 9, and sugar hill.
and im not sure if its already on your list, but add i am legend

now this isn't my list. its from a book i have called "zombie movies:the ultimate guide" it was written in 2008, so zombieland isn't in it, along with quarantine, and a few other older ones. on the whole though, its a very comprehensive guide to the vast majority of all the zombie movies made up until 08. i definitely recommend it to all fans of zombie movies. theres reasons listed why each of the above movies are on the list, i just didn't feel like typing them out. it reviews and rates nearly 300 zombie flicks. but ya anyway those are pretty much the best ones. i have seen most of them and can back up the ratings.
in case you couldn't tell:
I back this list up. I've seen the majority of those films. I'll name some others if i remember them but I'm at school and i don't have my dvds here for reference.

Protip: Start watching a zombie movie sober, then take some fat bong rips about 1/4 of the way through the movie. Seriously some of the best movie-watching experiences ever. This method also secured the original Night of the Living Dead as my definite favorite zombie movie EVER.
Well you can't start seriously watching zombie movies 'til you watch the originals, in order. I just sat down and watched all of them in order last month for the first time and it was well worth it. I think doing so really gives you a good appreciation for the genre. It also lets you experience zombies how the world did before the zombie movie existed, and explore the genre as it was originally unfolded.
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Survival of the Dead (skippable but not terrible, what killed this one is the zombie makeup. Awful)
Land of the Dead (Terrible, awful movie)
Diary of the Dead (Strangely, inbetween these two awful movies is a nugget of zombie GOLD. Great zombie movie, very similar to "the trilogy.")
Survival of the Dead (Terrible, awful movie)
THEN you must watch "the trilogy" remakes: Tom Savini's 1991 NotLD remake, Dawn (2004), and Day (2008). The DotD remake blows and is easily the biggest disappointment of all of the zombie movies.
Then you should watch Zombii (AKA Zombi II) and Fido. From all of these movies you should get the zombie basics down. Honestly there aren't any really good zombie movies I've seen outside of the original Romero versions and remakes. Outside of Zombii, I don't consider movies with one or two zombie in it to be a zombie movie. Zombie movies should take place in a zombie apocalypse.

thats a lot of great info. i started the dl'ing tonight. so i should be finished with all the movies by this weekend. than this thanksgiving will be an all out zombie marathon.
why hasnt anyone mentioned Dead Set? it was a piece series on IFC. i have all 5 saved, but only saw the first epi. it looks pretty damn good so far. i might watch a few tonight.

I've got a few zombie flicks from Troma to add.
1) Redneck Zombies - This movie is in my top 5 zombie movies of all time (no need to repeat em because they've all been repeated enough already). Yes it's troma. Yes it's low budget. YES IT'S AWESOME. Funny, plenty of gore, trippy, a must watch.
2) Buttcrack - Just because it's so funny. Oh, and MOJO NIXON as preacher-man bob. Hilarious...
Honorable mentions go to Unspeakable and Garden of the Dead. Also troma films, they come in a 3-pack with Buttcrack (Troma Triple B-Header).

thats the most pure zombie movie in my opinion.
I have to disagree just for the sake of discussing zombies (one of my favorite pastimes). I think NotLD and Diary or probably the two most pure zombie movies. Mainly because in Dawn and Day, Romero hints at zombies having instilled memories and behaviors they carry on in their undead state. You know, the satire of people at the mall in Dawn and whatnot. That idea strays from the original zombie quite a bit, especially by the third one with Bub. It changed the rules a lot and paved way for Land, which sucked.

ill agree with NotLD but not Diary.
Diary was a stereotypical teen horror flick. the mythology around the zombies may be pure but the characters lacked any depth at all.
i kinda feel like they cant be that clean when it is so trite..

I thought Diary was fantastic. It actually shows the initial zombie outbreak and how it started which is cool because none of the rest do that, and placed a level of relevance to it with YouTube and the internet. I appreciated the zombie effects as they were the most true to the classic zombie since Day of the Dead, and the Blair Witch-style camera work did a good thing for the genre IMO. Sure there are aspects of the movie that one either dwells upon or overlooks. I choose to overlook some of the small shortcomings of that movie in favor of the fact that it delivers some of the best, most pure zombie action in any Romero zombie film.

I saw a movie recently called "survival of the dead" which I believe was Romero. It was horrible.
I watched the pilot episode of "the walking dead" which has started its first season on AMC and I thought it was pretty good. The acting might not be great but I think as the show progresses the acting may improve. I though the zombies were interestingly done, for example the half zombie in the park that Rick euthanizes towards the end of episode 1. You can watch the first episode on the amc website.

Sure there are aspects of the movie that one either dwells upon or overlooks. I choose to overlook some of the small shortcomings of that movie in favor of the fact that it delivers some of the best, most pure zombie action in any Romero zombie film.
fair enough.. i thought Diary was unwatchable. nothing i liked about that one.

that should get you started.. youve got a good mix (fast/slow zombies, horror/comedy, classic/modern, etc)
you should check out Zombie Girl too.. this isnt quite as important (or relevant) to the kind of movies youre looking for. its a documentary about a 12 year old girl shooting a full length zombie movie, titled Pathogen. if you like the process of film making then you would love this. i know i did 
the girl, Emily Hagins, has directed 2 other features since Pathogen, The Retelling, and shes currently in post for My Sucky Teen Romance.
ive been following her films fairly closely.. im really interested to see where she goes with all this.. shes 18 now. lots of time for a career in front of her.

True, the acting is pretty bad, but i like the pacing of the show and the way it seems to be headed.

The O'Bannon zombies (The Return of the Living Dead series) are terrible. Zombies don't speak and zombies don't want "BRRRRAAAAAIIIIINNNNNZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!" either. I say skip these, they're terrible movies.

ive downloaded all movies accept the RES EVIL series. so far ive seen Pontypool and OutPost.
first off. OUTPOST IS NOT A ZOMBIE MOVIE. second, it wasnt even a good horror flick.
pontypool was a little diff, but i did really enjoy it.
