Mountain Mushroom Farm
    #11681761 -

For those of you who haven't seen the construction pictures yet.  I've posted a few here and there in other threads, but never put together a semi-complete page.  This is where construction had to stop when winter set in.  Right now, we're at the spawn expansion stage and will be building bulk substrates from sawdust and straw within about four to six weeks.

I still have a few hundred more pictures from construction, so I'll be rotating them over the next months as I update the page.

Shiitake and oysters for the area grocery stores, and I'll be taking those plus P nameko and lion's mane to the farmers market, to see if we can get a market established for those.

This was built as a prototype model I hope to duplicate all over the US. The 2008 US farm bill provided for significant grants for innovative green farming technique development.  I built this underground so it would require no heat in winter or cooling in summer.  The air exchange system is passive, requiring no fans or other energy consuming equipment.  The humidification system is also passive, with rocks lining the floor, which will be sprayed with water twice a day.  The lighting is LED and will only amount to a few dollars per month.

I've had grant writers out here over the summer from the USDA and from our State Department of Agriculture.  They're waiting to see actual mushrooms coming out in order to quantify the production possibilities, and then they want to talk about grants to help people build mom and pop mushroom farms all over, using this plan as the basic model.

The State Department of Natural Resources is getting me hardwood chips from overgrown areas that are being thinned for fire prevention.  I've found a source for organic barley straw, and am getting 200 bales delivered the first week of January.  I should realistically be turning out about 40 to 60 pounds per day if my calculations work out.  It won't get us rich, but it's a living and shows what can be done by only two people without a lot of space.

This also fits into the new model for 'green agriculture' by growing local mushrooms on local waste material for the local market, thus avoiding the use of fossil fuels hauling products across country on trucks.

I tell you man that is awesome. My girl and I starting making plans to move to Montana when the kids are grown and we are back on our own. This is inspiration to help keep me on track.

F'n A that's amazing :billymaythumbup:

So you'll likely get grants, etc. to grow these delicious and beautiful things. Let me know if you need an apprentice/ assistant

Congratulations!!!

Ditto that. You are a true innovator. You are like the Ben Franklin of mycology showing us all the light. This would be so cool to do on my property, but we are moving over 100 miles away from the farm next year so I'm stuck with indoor, or small greenhouse grows. I'm glad to see the government is taking interest as well. Thanks for the inspiration.
