taking a semester off to save up money?
    #11645480 -

so... im poor as hell.
im going to school in a major city that is about an hour and a half commute each way 4 days a week, while staying at home and working nights.

my schedule this semester has been insane and im stressed the fuck out, (im actually writing this now insted of my final papers).

i have no money, im lucky if i can get 10 to 15 hours a week at a minimum wage job, thats not even enough to cover my bills each month and i constantly have to beg my parents for money, the student loan money barely covers just gas for the semester.

Lately things havent been going great at my parents jobs and they tell me that they cant keep on giving me money.

I told them that i wanted to take a semester off if i could find a full time job so i can try and save some money for the semester after and they are dead set against this. what the hell am i supposed to do?

i dont want to be some dipshit leeching off my parents but at the same time i have to finish college.

has anyone tried taking a semester off? did it help/hurt you academically?

If you need the money, you need the money. If you can't or don't want to take a loan out, you may have to take a semester off to work....You can always go to summer school too, and tackle some units during that summer session.

Do what you have to. Survival comes first, education comes second.

man, I got the same exact problem as you, except my parents house is 3.5 hours away so I cant commute, I can't live on campus because my federal loans are just enough to cover tuition but not housing because the one co-signed fed loan I had I lost when I turned 24 and was no longer a dependent of my parents, I can't get a private loan because my credit sucks and no one will co-sign for me, and I can't get an off campus apartment because the most I could afford for rent is about $300 a month which doesn't exist, and that's if I were to choose not to eat or drive or anything. Right now I'm crashing on a friends living room futon and paying their utilities which I can just afford. I'm dreading going back next semester and the only thing that's bringin me back is the fact that its my last semester. If you need to take some time off to get your shit together you definitely should if you can afford to, but don't wait too long if you can help it because most of the financial problems I've had are the result of me taking 2 years off. I haven't had one smooth semester since I came here. Good luck man and just remember your not the only one. peace

Just do it so you don't have to live like this. Taking a semester off won't hurt you, you'll just have to stay in college a semester longer than you normally would have.

keep in mind that education is what is going to take you out of that cycle you're in.

student loans are murder though... how long is your semester and how many more do you have left? Are they semesters? What are you doing?

four years of pain is way worth the payoff in the end. Having a job you enjoy is a gift.

if your parents are willing to pay for your school, it might be wise to take it.

however, i did take some time off from school to make money. my intention was to only take one semester off, but it turned into a year.. during that time i was making decent money at a restaurant (avg. $17/hr), and it still took me a full year to get back on my feet, so... take that into account. life tends to just happen, and it would suck to get wrapped up in a job and end up not going back, especially when the offer was there to have it paid for.

If your school is like mine, and most others that I've been reading about, tuition will probably go up.

So by shifting your schedule back a semester, you're gonna end up paying more in the long run.

Just something to think about.

I've found they hurt more than they help. A semester off makes it much harder to get back into things at school. Your schedule can get completely off and fucked up, you can get used to not going to class, and not doing homework, and those are hard habits to get back into. Also, there's the chance that something happens and for whatever reason you don't ever go back, which is something of a risk, too. Not to mention that it may be hard to go back at all, depending on your school. But everyone's different
