Hens don't lay an egg a day.  Some of the commercial breeds get close but even they fall short of 365 a year, that is why there is all the cheap chicken in the stores.

A solid breed, treated very nice, organic... will still pop out a very high quality egg, per day.

That's all I can ask for, it's no commercial venture, 1 egg a day is great.

Treat them nice, feed them right, enjoy a high quality product

That is good way of teaching the birds and the bees to a young one I guess! And death when dinner comes around

Yep, you don't realize yet how many of us animals like the taste of chicken. As far as roosters go. A swift kick to the cranium will usually chill them out but you don't want more than one if any at all. The only benefit I saw from having a rooster is that he looked out for his harrem. he would be the one watching for hawks and mink and ............
If you can get chickens and let them free range during the day and lock them up securely at night; you and your family will have a quality of life that is far superior to most of the civilized world.
Murray McMurray (sp?) is indeed a good place to start.
If you buy straight run chicks you can count on 2 out of 3 being cocks. It isn't always that way but if you want 10 hens and order 10 straight run chicks, you could end up with one hen. It just happens that way and once they reach a certain age it is very hard to feather sex them ( that's telling the sex by the feathers )
Once you get into this hobby you may find that you will never be the same. They eat bugs and are good with kids and feed you the best eggs that you will ever eat. If you have only ever had store bought eggs you might be a little creeped out by good eggs.
Seriously. Once you have what you were supposed to be eating your whole life you will never want another egg from a tortured chicken again.

So very true, it's just amazing.

Same goes for fruit straight off a tree or veges straight out of the ground.

We have grown up with subpar product, once you experience the real thing, it's hard to go back.

Yeah they're just an egg, nothing different.

What's on the inside though, the colour/smell and taste are worlds apart.

Na it's exactly the same, don't get confused :vaped: it's an egg, no difference.

You crack it side by side though with a standard mass produce cage egg, THEN you will see.

The composition, the colour, the smell will immediately be apparent.

Then you cook it and OMG :vaped: it's just a vastly superior food product, 10x the quality for like a 1/10th of the price.

QFT Chubba.
The yolk is thick and nasty and flavorful and makes the best anything.
Sometimes there are 2 yolks in one egg.
It's nasty and probably causes cancer.
I'm just pissing with you. But home grown eggs are way better than anything that you can buy.
I had several types of chickens that all layed brown eggs and I still drooooooollll when I think of them.

If you really can raise chickens. Please do.
You and your family will talk about it until the day you leave this planet for an eternal place.
and you will be glad that you did.
PM me if you really do get some chicks and need any advice I can give.
I would gladly enjoy your animal husbandry by living vicariously through your experience.
and I do have some experience with chickens.
Your post makes me want to get some more and I've been wanting to get some more for a long time now.
It's just that I moved to town and don't know if I can even do it or not.
It is a rewarding experience and you will not be sorry for doing it.
Your family will come together closer and you will have a better quality of life.
I'm out for the night but I stand behind what I said.
PM me if you need advice. It's just like growing oyster mushrooms.
Everyone who can; Should.
Peace Y'all.

Yes.

Most people refrain from having roosters because they're loud (except for the Mexican family two doors down :crankey:). And it ain't like the cartoons where they only crow at dawn, those fuckers crow whenever the hell they feel like it (e.g. Most days at 2 or 3 in the morning)

I hate to reinforce stereotypes, but I live in an Alabama town that's about 50% Hispanic, so I know a few thangs about chickens.

They are -worthy stupid animals sometimes.

they are great to have around, alot of fun to watch, and interact with,  they need calcium (crushed oyster shells) for the eggshells, and proteins (meat) they will pick a bone clean,i also give them cracked corn, layer pellets, corn on the cob, all kinds of beans, i save all table scraps for them, and they love me for it. i lost one to a skunk, i trapped and relocated two or three so far.

I have a big 10x5 dog pen about 6 foot high that i could easily use for chickens. I would make a roosting place for them that opened right into it. Other than that i am going to put up a small 3 foot fence to section off about 25x30 area in my backyard for a vegetable garden that I'm putting in next year. I think that would be good enough room for 2 or 3 chickens.
