Who here is honestly unhappy with P&S as it stands today?
    #11622023 -

Let's just see if any changes are even wanted, before we go suggesting things and forcing choices and whatnot.  Is anyone here genuinely unhappy with what they find when they visit this forum?  If so, please say why.

You know what they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  So lets see what the word is first, you know?  Because we don't just want to be revisionary.  Also, we don't want to think that our own problems with the forum are everyone's.  After all, the more one goes here the more one might develop observational biases about what they like or dislike.  Honestly, I've been here posting a long time and I've not noticed any difference in the discussion at all, which is what is supposed to happen, this is philosophy not sports.  The idea is that people make these same mistakes repeatedly, so by letting them come here and repeat them for us will help them.  Philosophy isn't really  about fun, or self indulgence, those are just bonuses.  Its about the love of wisdom.  We can't love wisdom by excluding people based on what they consider wisdom, isn't that contradictory?

Anyway, excuse my subtle critique, here's the poll:
Are you happy with P&S as is?
You may choose only one

If I was unhappy with it I would most likely stop coming here.

Here I am! :awesome:

So are you saying that if you had even one area that you thought could be improved (you were unhappy with) you would just leave?

This poll is way to black and white to make sense imo.

While I obviously overall really like this forum I still think there is some room for improvement.

Not to mention the OP states a personal bias and is politicking  with the poll. Obviously we know how he thinks we should vote.

Well, I voted yes, there's room for improvement in everything but I think this forum is good overall.

"I'm unhappy with so many people pretending to be nice in the forum and then showing in PM that they are actually irascible, vindictive and quite likely, mentally ill. I'm also dulled by all the child's play. Otherwise, I don't expect PS&P to be a different type of forum than it is."

Do you think that exclusion will help those people?  Will it help to end child's play?

It comes down to what this forum is to you.  If this forum is your playhouse or retreat, then exclude people who make it unnerving.

If, however, this forum is here to help people overcome wrong beliefs, or at least to encourage people to question their own biases, then excluding the crazies is not going to help.  If we want this forum to be here for the greater good, exclusion is contrary to that.

"No, and as I know you're referring to the stickies and polls several people are aware that ideas and opinions aren't the problem, but those ideas and opinions being deployed to attack others or to break civil discussion or to convert others or to just be a dunderhead in general. "

What about reasonable people's responsibility to bring the discussion back around and stamp out unreasoned argument?  Again, if you are here for fun exclude away, the assholes will only make everything worse.  If you want there to be fewer assholes in this world, singling them out and keeping them from being questioned is contrary to that.

I do agree this poll is general, but I am looking at this from the standpoint that I see no room for improvement.  My favorite times here are arguing with people who A: hold beliefs tightly and B: give me the chance to subtly belittle them

If it were up to me, M&P would be put back into this forum, but thats only because I'm not down with promoting such mental illness, and I feel our freedom of speech should be enough to justify any questions of anything.  Not to say we need to be mean about questions, quite the opposite.  But some people prefer to have emotional insulation, so be it, who am I to judge.

"I think heavy medication, a strict program of meditation and hard physical activity, or something similar will help those people."

If you don't think philosophy can help people become more sane then why are you moderating this forum?  I know you're better than that though, you're probably just stressed or something, idk.  Take it easy.

"M&P should not be in this forum for one crucial reason: there'd be too many posts cluttering the place up. "

You can't change someone's mind without their consent...

That's not true necessarily.  If a person has no answer to a question, then they change their own mind.  If they remain irrational, then lather rinse repeat.  Shutting people out for fear they will never improve is unjustifyable.  It rests on predicting the future.  How do you know you're right that a person is unfixable?  How do you know?

What is "genuinely unhappy"?

I'm unhappy with so many people pretending to be nice in the forum and then showing in PM that they are actually irascible, vindictive and quite likely, mentally ill. I'm also dulled by all the child's play. Otherwise, I don't expect PS&P to be a different type of forum than it is.

You force people to pretend to be nice by banning them when they show how they actually are. I love this forum, always itneresting stuff to read, but to discuss? Please, it's impossible because of these dumb rules that make no sense and limit free speech. Psychology is about personality, banning personalisms is banning psychology. Peope actually get banned on psychology forum for playing the psychiatrist.. lol.

Each time I bring personality into a discussion, I get banned because it's considered as an "attack" just because people fail to see how personality has everything to do with psychology. Your personality is like your belief system, how can you not discuss your belief system in a philosophy forum? Isn't this what philosophy is all about, belief systems?

Well I'm not talking about you in particular lakefingers I'm just saying how banning personalisms will lead to people being fake and working out their anger in pm.. just explaining why things are as they are. Thanks for the proposal Icelander, thats really nice of you

Am I the only one who never PM's?

I never even receive any, and don't care to.

Are we in agreement that this forum isn't very broken, and we shouldn't write people off, or treat this place like a playhouse with a "no jerks aloud" sign on the front?

I say bring the jerks on, the right questions, whatever that means, always win.  I think the people who have the problem with dogmatic idiots are likely to just be people who hold their own dogma and get butthurt when they argue with a person who has a less-socially accepted belief system who is essentially their mirror.
