Re: Why is it alright for you to watch television? [Re: Grav]
    #1161137 -

I never said the majority was good. There isn't a single decent sitcom on television right now, most news stories resort to sensationalism over importance, and commercials seem like an insult to my intelligence.

The reason we get all of this bullshit isn't so much because there's a sinister group of media executives trying to control us, it's because people are stupid, and they're getting EXACTLY what they want.

Just because you and the people you associate with are dissapointed with the state of television, doesn't mean that the majority of the population is.

Most people don't care about learning new things, they want things that are fast paced, exciting, and easy to understand. They don't want to be challenged by their television, they just want to be mesmerized by it.

I don't think it causes any real decline in the overall intelligence of the population. We aren't losing intellectuals to television. Stupid people buy into it, and smart people know how to handle it.

Oops, that post wasn't meant to be a reply to yours.

I agree with most everything you say.

But I think we are losing people to TV... and I don't mean just tv, but that it's just a reflection of the phenomena of turning off your brain, and ignoring real issues. Whether it was devised by evil media scientists or not, isn't the point, but it's that it IS happening. It's pacifying people, keeping them satisfied with a small world. A world that's not real. I really think it affects a person alot more than you'd think on a subconcsious level.

Who knows who could or couldn't be 'smart' before the media world captures them.

I guess I'm trying to bring into light how TV is connected to the bigger picture, while you're saying how the actuall process of tv-watching occurs.

"the phenomena of turning off your brain, and ignoring real issues"

Well, this is very real, but I don't think it's happening any more than it ever was. People have been stupid and ignorant for as long as humanity has existed.

I don't think society is any worse now that TV has come along.
