watching horror flicks
    #2638687 - 05/04/04 10:28 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I saw the new Dawn of the Dead today.  Scary.  The zombies are a little bit more badass than in the original.  :chainsaw:
I like watching horror movies but sometimes I feel like it's bad karma.  I don't know if they are desensitizing me to violence or something even worse maybe.  I still can't watch the evening news cause the stuff going on in the world today is horrible but I feel like it's being presented in a certain way to manipulate me into responding a certain way.  Horror movies the horrible imagery is much more intense, but it's all fake and I don't feel like I'm being manipulated.  I dunno what to think but I know I should begin to take care about how I respond to this stuff as the real world gets more and more apocalyptic.

Many years ago Ram Dass spoke about the Bardol Thodol (Tibetan Book of the Dead) and horror films. One's attraction to Hell Planes is not a healthy one, and may well result in being attracted to such a place in the after-death Bardo phases. Similarly, attraction to mating couples at the time of death is said to bring one right back into a womb through the lust experienced, and so watching porno films and such can program one's mind for that eventuality also. Attachment to unregenerated Root Chakra psychologies (anal-genital fixations with fear and lust predominating) is a trap.

I don't know who Ram Dass is. I don't believe in Bardol, or Tibetan religion. I do however believe in Nightol and it's ability to help me get my Zs. If you're talking about reincarnation I gotta figure that God doesn't pass his judgement on souls primarily based on what genre movie they like best.

I think watching horror movies in general is unhealthy, but Dawn of the Dead (original) is actually a great movie and has some spiritual statements for those who are paying attention. For instance, Jesus, Buddha, and many others have compared the mental state of most people to sleep. The zombie is the lowest level of undead because they have the lowest level of awareness. That first movie is actually a very clever social commentary on the shallowness of the masses with the zombies sleep walking around in a shopping mall of all places..the ultimate consumers!! There was a great deal of humor walking hand-in-hand with death- kind of like life eh? Of course you don't have to get up everyday and blow a zombie's head off with a shotgun, but you take my point.

If the zombies in the first movie seemed to be on opiates, the zombies in this years remake seemed to be on coke. They were more threatening in this one and there was less opportunity for humor and social commentary. It was just a good thrilling movie. When the movie ended some in the audience applauded and I haven't seen that in years at a movie.

So don't get me wrong, I'm not recommending horror movies to develop spiritually, I'm just saying there can be redeeming qualities in *some* of them. It just goes to show you that you can find truth in anything if you are paying attention.

I never thought I'd be discussing zombies in S&P!

My life is a 21 year thread in the quilt of eternity. It is woven from the threads of my parents and will weave the threads of my children.

This short time is enough to spend in creation, I don't require some underlayer/subspace/afterlife to explain or ease this reality. My short verse will be sufficient.

When I was a kid, watching horror movies was deeply emotional. I just couldn't handle it. Now I relish it. I soak up the fear and despair and it quenches some hidden thirst.

Experiencing the hights of Love as one does on E, etc. has a way of warning me about the depths of fear which are just as possible. Exploring the Fear can be exhilirating.

...and hey, if you're worried about the afterlife, having super good experiences your whole life would make me fearful of karmic equalization. Best get the dirty work out of the way (by 'fearing' in this life) to be compensated hereafter.

Maybe youve got to know who and what someone is talking about before you evaluate it. Blind faith is just blindness, not faith.

three things:

1- watching so many horror films has made you paranoid

2- horror films are pre-meditated attempts to manipulate your mind in order to get a desired stimulus. Read the writings of Hitchcock and you will find out how creepy horror filmmakers really are

3-the world is becoming LESS apocalyptic, the world is much safer than it was during world war 1, world war 2, and periods of the cold war. You can thank a integrated global economy for that.

i no longer watch horror movies because my imagination goes wild with them. In india they advise practicing buddhists not to watch horror movies for this reason, being "freaked out" might be fun, hell i watched them from when i was little up until a year ago, but it wasn't healthy for me because it brought thoughts and images into my reality which wasn't good. I was advised by my spiritual guide for this reason to steer clear of them. After all, fear is a veil to whats really there.

I don't think it has anything to do with karma, per se, but in general its probably not healthy for many people. Being scared at night of aliens outside you window is just stupid and such a product of hollywood.

I guess I'm weak, but I can't watch horror films, or the news, and I can't read the newspapers.

But I will tell you a way to watch horror flicks without too much bother.

Turn the volume down.  It's the scary music that makes the movie most difficult to watch.

Yes, I vote. I read the thing that is mailed out before voting day. The thing that describes candidates or issues. I make my mind up based on that. I don't make my mind up based on the T.V.'s or the newspapers' interpretation of candidates or issues.

And, I talk to people. A lot of people. I get opinions from the people I run into, from all walks of life.

No, I don't trust highly-educated journalists. They are usually giving the slant that is propagated by the network or newspaper for whom they work.

I used to get freaked out by scary movies when I was little. However, after seeing some beautifully terrifying things on mushrooms and DPT, scary movies seem tame and cheesy in comparison. I still go, though, for the parts that make you 'jump', cause its kind of like going on a rollercoaster.

One's attraction to Hell Planes is not a healthy one, and may well result in being attracted to such a place in the after-death Bardo phases.

Huh? So Hollywood producers and screenwriters are well-acquainted with the Bardo and Hell Planes and are trying to trap our souls after death?

Wait! Sounds like a good idea for a horror movie...

Uh,....no. It is our attraction to states of uncanniness and fear that Ram Dass was suggesting had further implications - beyond the mere desire to become spooked. You know...the metaphysical infrastructure of all the innocent, silly, meaningless things that we humans like to amuse ourselves with, while 'in Reality' dom-dom-doom! - we're in a cosmic 'movie' and when it ends and the 'Unmitigated Light of Ultimate Reality' dawns....then we will find ourselves in the Realm to which we are most attracted.
