mania/psychosis
    #11573236 -

part of me was able to tell myself i was having delusions....
why then did the psychotic self control my behavior?

do emotion or feelings outweigh thought and reason?

Emotion wins hands down. Especially if it's below conscious awareness. It's no contest. Look at the world and you will see. We all say peace but it's always more war, etc, etc.

I think a more accurate question would be:

"Can emotion or feelings outweigh thought and reason?"

And I would answer, yes. It seems to happen frequently.

One concept that I find interesting is "Emotional hijacking" and responding to emotionally loaded situations.

You could elaborate further though...

Do you mean that while the "delusions" were taking place, you were able to separate an awareness to observe the situation simultaneously, or was the awareness of "delusion" an observation after, even if it was only after the briefest period?

What do you mean by "control?"

Were you unable to stop it, or unwilling?

i behaved in ways that i felt were compelled. i wasn't able to stop and think rationally for extended periods of time...but i was still able to tell my self in interments that the delusions i was having weren't real.

I think it is very possible to have conflicted responses. Certain trains of thought may ensue, to explain and or justify (for an example) a very realistic sensory delusion or hallucination. Particularly those highly emotionally affective.

However when the brain is allowed further processing time, it may begin to make correlations with other belief patterns that are not in agreement with said delusion/hallucination, after the initial response is over, and then begin to counter explain the experience.

I think mania & psychosis is a really interesting subject. I found an article on psychosis which looks at the role of dopamine and the idea of "salience". Salience is the feeling of significance that you attach to thoughts, objects and so on.

With a high dose of mushrooms, one effect is that if I watch TV, all the action seems highly significant. The lyrics in music have a specific meaning. Crazy ideas seem to be obviously true. (N.B I'm not sure that mushrooms actually have much to do with dopamine, but the effects are the closest I've had to a psychotic state and illustrate the point).

This imbalance in feelings of "significance" is the idea of "aberrant salience" - a change in your brain function is causing you to treat meaningless coincidences and irrational ideas as though they are highly significant. You don't just think they might be true, you experience an overwhelming feeling that you KNOW they are true. With my mushroom delusions, I'm partly aware that I'm delusional, enough to avoid acting out in a dangerous manner, but the delusion is still very real.

Quote:
It is postulated that before experiencing psychosis, patients develop an exaggerated release of dopamine, independent of and out of synchrony with the context. This leads to the assignment of inappropriate salience and motivational significance to external and internal stimuli. At its earliest stage this induces a somewhat novel and perplexing state marked by exaggerated importance of certain
percepts and ideas.

So your comment about "emotions outweighing reason" would match up with that theory - a dopamine imbalance is fucking up the scales that you use to weigh the significance of everyday occurrences and ideas against cold rationality. It may even fuck-up the ability to tell when a rational conclusion has been reached. The certainty that 2+2 = 4 is probably caused partly by the assignment of salience to a logically correct outcome. If any old number produces that same feeling of "I know it's correct" you could end up in a state where logical thought completely breaks down and you are equally sure that 2+2=5.

The article is long and not particularly easy to read, but it's worth skimming through and seeing if their theories match your own experience of psychosis. I love their phrase that dopamine is "the wind of the psychotic fire" - someone's been at the mushrooms!:mushroom2:

very interesting article

i was told that i had psychosis and had to spend 21 days in a mental hospitol.. then went to another doctor that told me i had nothing.. so 21 days for nothing

but now to my point.  i was into the reptilian agenda for 3 months.. I TOTALY agree with the link between psychosis and dopamnine bc i had probably close to no dopamine flowing during those 3 months..

but i also think that psychosis has close ties with the pineal gland.. the gland is what connects the two sides of the brain.. someone with bipolar goes back and forth between right and left and schizo people stay on one side of the brain..

man its ironic that drugs are demonized.. they can prevent the scariest deseases known

It may be that its because the misuse or unskillful use of drugs can also be the cause of physical/emotional problems.

Well when it comes to taking psychedelics I think anyone and everyone if they want. Then survival of the fittest will figure it all out.
