Any Ideas on what this is? (Virginia Shroom)
    #11516563 -

Hi guys, I just signed up here because I happened to find a few of these growing in my yard and I've NEVER seen any shrooms like this in my area in 17 years. Forgive the quality and the distance of this picture, I was kinda sizing it up here and taken off a camera phone. There are 4 more where that guy came from.

This guy is roughly 9 inches tall, semi bright orange on top with a bunch of cream colored spots of something on top (sorry im not an expert or even considered a novice here) and has a white stem (started turning yellowish/brownish right after I picked it and handled it).

Like I said above, I've never seen anything like this and could not get over it. Way cool. lol

Can anyone help me identify this? I looked in the states list and googled each listing and none of them looked like my friend above, so I am not sure what it is. Any help appreciated and details also.

Thanks
Chris Hernandez

Id get a sporeprint but not sure I have a container large enough for this. I think I have a big stirring pot I could use, but do I need to go pick another one of his friends? I picked him almost 36 hrs ago and is all shriveled up. I didnt know how to take care of them until I started reading on here an hour ago, lol.

How long can I wait before I do a spore print?

Spore print is not required. It will come out white.

I don't exactly know, what you want with a spore print (except you just want to extend your collection), but even if it's 36 hrs. old, it should drop quiet a lot of spores.

Be careful for it not to decay while taking a print!
This happens quiet fast with mushrooms, like these.

That's a huge Amanita, cool find!

If you would like to know what species it possibly is, you could pick another and take good pics of the base of the stem and post them here. Certain features on the bulb are important when identifying in this genus.

Yeah, I was thinking of finding my real camera for some good pics of the other if my neighbor hasnt destroyed them yet. I just dont know where the camera is. If I csnt find it, I will just use my cell phone to take them a little better and closer up for you guys.

Is anyone familiar with finding these in Virginia area? Like I said I've never seen these!

Looking at the knowledge of Amanita's, considering that there are many types and subtypes of them, I am also noticing that most of the noted types have bulbous caps. None of them describe a cap like the ones I've found here. Do you have a term for the type/look of mine?

If I had to guess so far off what I've seen, I would guess its a subtype of Amanita Gemmata or possibly, Amanita muscaria var. formosa (Yellow-orange Fly Agaric) but obviously I have no way of finding out do I? (aside from providing more photo's)

I'd say it's most likely amanita amerimuscaria. The bulbous cap is associated with younger specimens; they caps flatten out as the mushroom matures. The cracked form is common when conditions are dry; I've seen it many many times.

I was going to say that it looks much like a weather-bleached A. amerimuscaria.

Could also be Amanita persicina if its orange.

The eastern forms of A. amerimuscaria tend to be pale yellow in age, with perhaps some orange tones at the center.
Both species are known to overlap in your region.
