pelliculosa growing in deer poop
    #11415885 -

once again in my never ending search for baeos i encounter some pellis but no baeos. this is in douglas fir forest with a few hardwoods. usually i see them growing out of conifer debris. so i thought it was cool to see them in some deer pellets.

That is a nice find, and really interesting too, that species is not known to fruit from dung!
Were there any other specimens around that area fruiting from the decayed conifer mulch?

have you considered other species?

P. angustispora is reported from cervine dung.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I thought it could be another species, I think you've got it canid, good call!

spore microscopy alone should differentiate the two.

Yes, the spores of the species you mention are larger on average than those of P. pelliculosa, it is supposedly quite rare also!

and differently shaped, they are reported as narrowly ellipsoid.

narrowly ellipsoid, 12-15 long, 5-8 wide.

Yep, the spores of P. pelliculosa will be subellipsoid to subovoid, 9-13 by 5-7 µ.

It seems unlikely that this is P. pelliculosa and P. angustispora is a non-bluing species.  If it is bluing/hallucinogenic the best match is P. sierrae but a specimen and prints should be saved for microscopic confirmation.  It could be something undescribed.  Great find.

ya send away for sure.is P sierra the same as P subfimetaria or did i read this wrong? if i am not wrong, doesnt subfims have a ring and are known for horse shit in fields and not wild deer shit in the woods?

how do you tell the difference between those and mycenas? With the striated caps and brown stems they look like Mycenas to me.

davide - the brown/white scaly stalk, pellicle, thickness of the stalk and coloration of the cap plus it's substrate make this very certainly a Psilocybe species.

The spores of Mycena are white, the spores of Psilocybe are purple-brown, it is without a doubt a Psilocybe species!

True enough, but there aren't many species to choose from that are already known.  Microscopy would help.  Maybe it is just P. pelliculosa that just took advantage of some deer poop.  It looks pretty much like that species.

i have only found pells once and that was a long time ago.but they do look pretty similiar, not exact though. but dung loving vs wood loving is a big difference. and look at how spaced out the gills are, looks dung loving.i am looking forward to more pics and some more info.

i don't see any sign of blue in the photos, but as we know, you could sometimes pick up 20 specimens of Pelliculosa and not see a hint of blueing and other times, the first one you pick up would blue intensely.
