What? Slugs, deer, and many insects eat amanitas. Touching them wouldn't hurt you even if they were deadly poisonous. Many people eat Amanita muscaria, and it has VERY RARELY caused death, and only in large doses.

The most poisonous mushrooms in the world are either whitish greenish (Amanita phalloids) or brownish orange (Galerina sp.), and aren't very brightly colored, excpet for bright white (Amanita virosa)I guess...

I personally do not eat them, but not because they "are deadly poiosonous", but because I don't trip anymore. This is a photography thread.

*Edit* Just for the record, just because a mushroom is eaten by other living things does not mean it is not poisonous.

Stop spreading your ignorance. you sound like a moron talking about what you know nothing about. if you ever actually looked at one of these mushrooms you would know that almost all of them become a snack or a meal to something before you get to them. and they are not any more potentially fatal than psilocybe mushrooms. i can surely say i value my life, and take offense to you saying that someone who consums them does not. it is unfortunate that you have probably spread this ignorance to many people already, and they will never understand the power behind Soma because of the fear you, and many other uneducated people have put in this drug, which is harmless in moderation.

Wiggity wiggity word. I agree with everything you say, except A. muscaria being as fatal as psilocybe mushrooms. Psilocybes take like 3 or 4 pounds dried to kill you, where as muscimol takes much less.

I couldn't find the data for humans, but Rats have a 280 mg/kg LD50 for psilocybin, where it is like 4.5 mg/kg LD50 for muscimol.

I am not trying to argue or say that A. muscaria is deadly, just trying to clarify things a bit. Great post Shroomhunting.

yeah.... i was not sure how much psilocybin it takes to kill you. i was going off the fact that there only seem to be 2 cases of psilocybin related death,and only two or three muscimol related deaths, from the research i have done. i think the reason amanita muscaria has such a bad name is because the amanita genus seems to be the the one that causes many mushroom related culprit, but A. Muscaria in only to the culprit of these deaths in the case of the ignorant, and naive. if anyone has anymore info to shed on this subject though, i would be interested to learn more...

There are a few patches of Amanita muscaria in walking distance from downtown PDX. The last two years on lunch breaks from work I've walked around and found them in the same spot. This year so far I have not seen them pop up in those spots. One time I actually noticed a few growing out of where a tree was planted on the sidewalk between a building and pretty well traveled street. Was surprised to notice that. If I see something like that this year I'll get a picture.

Here is a picture of a couple. I counted over 70 in various stages of maturity, all growing around a tree of unknown species. I've never seen so many in one place!...But this is also my first year hunting shrooms. One pic is the same from my signature, its that special:tongue2:

This one is sideways for some reason. I didn't notice this at first, but it looks like it has tiny yellow eyes, heh

I found this patch in Vancouver, btw. You know, its amazing really. I've never eally noticed A. muscaria before I started hunting, but since I've started this year, I've already seen what seems like hundreds
