Questions about Amanitas near Bellingham
    #3178147 - 09/25/04 06:33 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I live in the Bellingham area (north of seattle) of the pacific northwest.

I have been reading about psychoactive amanita apecies, and was interested in trying to round some up to use a group setting with some friends who share an interest in the religious/spiritual aspects of psychedelic states. I was wondering if any of the pros could help me out with a quick question. Is the season to get some psychoactive amanitas in this area gone? Erowid says the season lasts until october for some species and to november for others, but I also recall reading that the amanita season ends about the same time the leaves fall of the trees. The leaves are falling off the trees.

This experience isn't something I am especially eager to rush into, but this is a substance I definately want to try in the right circumstances, and if the season is coming to an end I want to get out there and get them before it does. I'm going to head into the woods tomorrow to look for these. In addition to the seasons question, maybe someone has some advice for looking for these mushrooms in my general area (especially, what would be look alike poison species to be especially vigilant about). Thanks in advance for any help. This board is great.

A. muscaria should be popping up very soon down around sea level, they're already up at some higher elevations...

I live in Eugene Oregon and A. muscaria grow from sept. to around april. I've even seen them in may. Obviously each year brings with it diffrent fruiting results. The best way to find out is to just go out and do some searching. Your first step is to (if you don't allready know) learn how to identify what a birtch tree looks like. A.muscaria forms a mychorizal relationship with birtch trees and can often be found growing underneath or near by. Happy hunting.

They also have a relationship with pine and also grow around and under them. SOmetimes they even grow in gardens from the mulch of pine and birch.

The A. gemmata images I posted early yesterday are from a pine tree growing under them and around them.

There were many. However, the largest patch over o 100 pounds a year pop ui[p in a desdeerted closed naval hospital grounds in Aastoria, Oregon. However, the caretakers, an elderly couple, always chase everyone out who tries to get them. There are cameras ont he naval hospital grounds so they knwo when sonmeone is trespassing.

That is good. I have found some places with birch trees, but no amamitas so far. Soon! I hope...

I'm on the other side of the country... but I have been having tremendous luck finding them under conifers... specifically Blue Spruce. I work on a treefarm so its easy for me =D Good luck with your hunt
