Yellowish mycelium means metobolites is present, in other words its peeing, Its fine.

I always like the tek that Roger rabbit recommended....thats basicaly like a three day process....Soak 24 hours....Dry 24 hours ...then pc and knock up....works wonders...
as for LC s I personally had success with the Wheat pasta tek....easy to get in the syringe and grows way quik....yeah I would say moister contend did play a big role in some of my jars...the ones with too much didn't grow as fast....
ANd I have had results with incubating in the cubbard above the refridgerator....

man that sucks....

BTW is there any contam that looks like chalky/cheesey white mycellium?

Or is that just a diff kind of growth?

Lots of other molds/fungus have white mycelium.

Some bacteria will produce a whitish goo too.

You want it to be closer to 80-82 when colonizing. The lower the temps, the slower it will grow. A jar at 70 degrees will take 3-4 days longer to colonize than a jar at 80. So try to warm it up and keep the temps consistent. Fluctuating temps will inhibit growth too if too cold. Then just wait til its fully colonized. Don't mess with the jars and be sure nothing other than micropore tape or tyvek are covering the holes...or it may stall...

I personally would not go over 75f ambient temps if I could help it.  Quart jars can/will be several degrees warmer on the inside.  Once you go over 83f colonization will slow down and increase the chance of contamination.
Quote:
*I've been saying that for years. My petri dish studies a few years ago showed that cubensis reaches peak linear growth between 75F and 80F, then is flat until 83F, where it starts to slow down. Mycelium at 86F is growing at about 2/3 the speed of mycelium at 80F. In addition, the higher temps tend to stimulate thermophic molds and bacteria. There's LOT'S of good information in TMC, but that 86F figure is one of the errors. When I did it there were ten petri dishes colonizing at each temperature, in separate containers. I went through well over 200 petri dishes of mycelium for no other reason than to determine the temperature that stimulates fastest growth, other factors being equal. That was a far more controlled study than the one reported over 20 years ago. If someone else wants to repeat the experiment, go for it. I consider the matter closed. Paul doesn't even repeat that 86F figure, which someone else sent him. Bottom line was the tubs that had petri dishes between 75F and 81F showed no difference in growth. Below 75F, and above 81F growth slowed down, with a rapid drop in colonization speed below 70F and above 83F. At 86F, a petri dish would be 2/3 colonized, while its sister at 75F would be fully colonized. Rate of growth at 86F was exactly the same as rate of growth at 72F, with fastest growth as said, occurring between 75F and 81F. Note that these tests were for linear growth in the two-dimensional plane of a petri dish. In three-dimensional space such as in grain jars or bulk substrates, the effects of thermogenesis need to be considered, so ambient temps should be lowered slightly to compensate.

More info here.

I'd rather have slightly lower temps then slightly higher.  Might slow down colonization a little (my 'shroom room, is sitting at about 66f right now) but it doesn't increase the chance of contamination.

for quarts of birdseed, i use about 4-5cc and shake.  then leave aside in room temp.
  done in about 7-10 days.

Well the AT jars are doing OK I guess.

But I think the rest are fucked.

I have that chalky cheesy type mold you have...

I dont think its mycellium, its not that fluffy..

I think I may have put the polyfill in to tight actually..

I think its too late for these jars..

I have about 4-6 that I think may make it..

that should tide me over.

Thanks for all the advice people:thumbup: I will use it next time.

It could be your moisture content. RR recommends slightly less than what people recommend (unless they recommend slightly less to start!). I had this problem once before and in my case im sure it's the moisture content.

Yeah I think I will lay mine out and let em dry out a little next time, use more spore/lc solution and push the polyfill in the hole lighter.
