I was being facetious, my good man...

So anyway, let's get back on track. I really want to get a shiitake project put together. I need to gather some logs, dowels, and cultures.

Have you considered a monotube? I wonder if you could use coir like they do with cubies.

oh absolutely. I am actually very curious about the possibility of growing shiitake in a tub setup, but I'm not sure it can be done?

What substrate would one use?

I was wondering about coconut hair(coir) and a mix with coffee like they do to grow the cubensis.

shiitake's are mainly grown on hard wood. alder, oak, even aspen works. If the most productive cultivation method was the same as growing cubie's. I.E coir verm and what not, then all the professional growers out there would be doing it like that. you can try some crazy grow method and maybe you'll even grow a mushroom, but I'd recommend sticking to whats been proven time and time again. (Indoor sawdust bags) (outdoor wood beds or logs)

The yields from coir and verm will probably prove to be very low. Stamets estimates 1.5 to 3 lbs from the sawdust bag method. I have seen 2 lbs avg. myself, and i'm fairly happy with that.

You are right sticking with the tried and true methods does seem to be the best way to go. Do you think hard wood in a monotube environment would work?

If you want to get a jump start. DO some logs totem style now and incubate in the house in garbage bags. They really take off like this. My oyster logs fruited only a few months after inoculation.

I have shiitake cultures if your still trying to find one. They were cloned from an organic grocery store, so they are commercially viable. They seem to have a good shelf life. I found them easy to clone. I know reishi grows fine on coir, and I'd bet money shiitake would too.

Commercial growers depend on their harvest, so why would they change what works? Why would they switch from sawdust logs to more expensive coir just to find out? It would just increase their overhead, so I can't see them even being interested in experimenting. Coir may in fact be suitable for home growers.

I dunno why but shiitake's make me :puke: until I'm exhausted, then pass out.
