well man i did a grow log on shiitake a few years, and i never rly finished it up. I went back and found it for you, but there wadnt any pics of fruiting and such. i just never finish the thread. i guess i got side tracked. but heres the link.

I have seen some positive results with cloning store bought Shiitake on this forum. I imagine it depends on the freshness of the mushrooms though.

Why would you want to go through the trouble of inoculating logs when you can make your own 'log' in a bag. I would say its a lot less trouble.

why would shiitake get banned? thats retard. you should buy the growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms book. It has all the info for growing shiitake on logs outdoors and blocks indoors. it also describes several other species that are commercially grown.

why on earth DID they ban other NATURALLY occurring plants/fungi? :smirk:

It's not like it's psychoactive or anything. They might as well start banning potatoes if they are going to ban Shiitakes. Doesn't make much sense to me actually.

Shiitakes can be very dangerous in one way.

Moving whole logs more that 30 miles is illegal in many states, and if the log is infested with an invasive bug it could wipe out tons of trees.

Spread the word - don't transport firewood or untreated mushroom logs. If you have to transport them, kiln them first.

Shiitakes actually were illegal in the US until the 1970's.  It was confused with Lentinus lepideus, a problematic fungus that eats railroad ties.
