Eating it raw, dried, or... preserved???

I made a mistake of half drying some then putting in a ziplock bag. Not surprisingly it grew some green molds and spotted white cotton ones few days later. So I decided to pour in some balsamic vinegar over and left it in the fridge for a day, then all the mold disappeared. Now I have 'preserved' shrooms in a jar, do you think it would be safe to eat? I am thinking of following scenarios:

- Toxic stuff from molds will still be left, and would give me food poisoning, or make it even deadlier
- Destroyed active chemicals and is now no longer magical
- Reacted with the chemicals and produced something poisonous regardless of the mold remains

It would really suck to have food poisoning while tripping so tossing it would be the safest bet, but has anyone ever tried preserving them with salt and/or vinegar and had no problem?

The only way I would eat it would be by boiling it and making it into a tea. It will kill anything living and all the spores from the mold. The thought would still gross me out, but at that point I wouldn't think any harm would be done. I wouldn't eat them straight up though.

Toss it. Would you eat moldy bread? Moldy cheese? Toss it.

Moldy cheese is yummy~

The problem is though the mold is gone, even the smell is gone, because I poured like 1/4 cup of vinegar in it, but I'm not sure if the toxic waste is still left in the mess...

Might or might not be toxic.
Might or might not be allergenic.
Might or might not set you up for a future allergic attack, even with no symptoms now.

Most likely case: you'll be fine.
But don't risk it.
Toss 'em.

I wouldn't eat them for the record, but I am just saying this way will destroy the bad shit and leave you with active within the water.

You just make tea any ordinary tea, just steep longer. I bring the the water to a boil, add my tea of choice, and then added the mushrooms (which I break up into real small pieces but not too small I can't get the solids back out of the liquid). At that point I turn down the temp to low so that water isn't boiling, but more like simmering. I steep the tea with the burner on or else the tea will get cold and I think that makes it taste nasty. So I just steep the mushrooms for 30 min. After the first 3-5 min or so I will remove any tea bags I have added for flavor so it doesn't get too strong. I try to use a high anti-oxidant tea. I have found that using herbal teas or just water will turn the mushrooms black and looked bruised. But if I add a green tea or something with high anti-oxidants, I the mushrooms will stay white. I have no idea if this actually means anything at all, but it's something that I do out of preference. It works so I stick with it.

After the steep just strain your solids and give them a good squeeze between a couple spoons or something. Make sure you ring the solids out good. Some people will steep again. I have found that it's pointless. I just trow the mushrooms away down at this point. All the actives will be in the tea. I like to keep the tea warm in a thermos and drink over the course of 1-2 hours. If you drink it fast you be will in for one hell of ride, but it will only last 60-90 minutes. I have chugged them before and find it's before to make a lot tea so you can continually sip on it for an hour or more without having to consciously remember not to drink to fast. So dilute the mixture down for best results. You can make the peak last a lot longer by doing it this way. I have prolonged the experience to 6 hours, which was way too long. When I drink tea, I can feel the effects within minutes.

I should have stated, that not to be fact but assumption. Here is my logic, and if it's flawed tell me how so. When you boil the liquid you are sterilizing it. If you get water from a creek with living parasites, boiling it provides protection and makes the water drinkable. Plus we breath and consume mold spores all day long. So unless you are allergic to mold, which symptoms would already be present, then drink a liquid with "dead" spores wouldn't be any different than any other day. I don't see how boiling it wouldn't provide the protection.

Assumption, not fact:
If the mold contains a toxin, it may be water soluble and not break down at boiling temps.
One real life example: psilocybin.
If that survives the extraction, then some other mycotoxin might.

(It's not technically 'a toxin', but you see my point.)

Agreed. You're taking your chances by eating something contaminated with mold. The toxins could survive boiling, but I don't know much about mycotoxins like trichodemin, etc. To be honest, unless there are a lot of mushrooms in your bag, and that's all you have, I probably wouldn't risk it.

How about the preservation part? Say you have a good batch, and you wanna keep some for months, it seems turning them into chocolate works but howbout soaking them in salt/vinegar?

Never tried it. Vinegar is a known solvent of psilocybin, so you'd probably have to drink the brine for full effects.
Most of us just dry them.

I don't like eating chocolates. With good mushrooms (not moldy at any point) I will make them into a smoothie with fruit or tea. Those are the only ways I consume them.

When you preserve them you just dry them out over a fan followed by a desiccant. Or you could use a dehydrator. You never put them in a plastic bag when they contain moisture.
