Nope. They can't taste capsaicin in hot peppers, I can tell you that much. We used to have this big cockatoo that ate hot peppers all day long. Some creepy bird woman came in and "gave it a kiss" and the birds beak touched her lips and a few minutes later she was throwing a fit because her lips were on fire.

it really, really saddens me that several of you actually blame it on the birds.  you expect birds to be able to evolve in a couple decades?  the evolution of environmental avoidance takes GENERATIONS.  years and years and years.  we humans are polluting at an exponential rate.  the birds aren't exactly capable of problem solving and they haven't had enough time for an evolutionary ability to discern trash from food to have been genetically ingrained.  they're just birds. 

we are to blame.  no two ways about it.
