question about millet
    #1130990 - 12/11/02 01:36 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

I was just wondering...is there anyway you could sterilize millet, birdseed, straw etc... without using a PC. I dont have access to one and from what I hear those substrates produce more potent shrooms. Thanks.

The substrates don't produce more potent shrooms, though they do produce more shrooms.

hmm, I think there are some people around here that would debate you on this point.

Just wondering why if you steam say"Millet" for 1 hour in a steamer how come thats not going to sterilize it?If it will sterilize say"Brown rice"
Tryed to nuke(Micro wave) millet and it pops lol so thats out.
I have read its because there are more contams in millet but still 1 hour in a steamer would kill most things?right?

I was just trying to figure out a way to use something that is going to perform better than verm. because people say its not as good as grains. Is there anyway I could use something other than verm. without the use of a PC? If not, is there any other TEKs that would maybe help produce better than verm. and perlite. Thanks

Because you need a much higher temp to penetrate the small air pockets and structural cavities in the grain.

verm and grains have two totally different purposes. they are not interchangeable. you can't grow mushrooms using plain verm and nothing else but you can grow mushrooms using grains and nothing else. perhaps you meant to say brown rice flour and not verm?

kramer has been experimenting with an oven bird seed tek these past months and here is what he has to say:

15 cups extra fine verm(any verm works)
              6 cups brf
4 cups birdseed(mostly millet) steep in hot water 45 min.
              4 tbls flax seed mill
                water to taste
kramer uses mini-loaf alum. pans. put a nice 1/2 to inch layer of verm on top cover with 2 layers of alum. foil bake @325 for 1hour (pre heat oven) innoculate on all  sides and in the middle. 30-40 days later your golden. kramer has had much sucsess with the pesa strain and this tek. NOTE: if you try to go with any more birdseed than this you are inviting contams althogh kramer has had sucsess with hmf and this tek . yeilds are better than plain brf. happy farming!!!
