First Attempt - Question Regarding Cakes [updated w/ new pic & question]
    #11229367 - 10/11/09 08:38 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, an acquaintance asked me to post this for him. This is his first attempt at cultivation and he'd like some expert opinion on the cakes. Let me say that there was an.. issue.. with the sterilization in that twice the amount of water was used in the pressure canner (3 qts instead of 1.5 qts), due to a misreading of the canner manual (oops). Thus, many of the canning jars got water logged. He thought he'd try to salvage the cakes anyway and inoculated the five that were the least saturated (using a Penis Envy strain). That was two weeks ago. Four of the five appear to be moving along.. slowly.. (he abandoned one that had produced nothing), but he'd like your opinion on if these look like healthy cakes or if they look suspect. One in particular looks different than the others - it has root-like arms extending from the main mass, as shown here. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the info. Yeah, he should've just started over, but he only had a small batch of vermiculite so he took a shot.

He got the PE at Earth's Tongue.

Yeah, his experience wasn't the best, and he did use Li'l Shop of Spores for his next purchase - taken from the vendor list here, he might add.

This is one of his jars at 3 weeks. If you notice there's a darker rust-colored spot near the lid. Two other jars have similar (but smaller) areas of discoloration. Any ideas on what it is?

It could definitely be metabolites. Mold will spread and have a very obvious color. Metabolites look like your cake pissed in the jar.

I've looked at the contaminants FAQ (http://www.shroomery.org/5276/What-are-common-contaminants-of-the-mushroom-culture) and it doesn't appear to be anything on there, and I've poked around at metabolite pics and that's a possibility, although from what I've gathered they're more yellow then reddish-brown. I've noticed that the spots in question seem dry, and as I've noted they're all near the tops of the jars. I'll pass along the suggestion, thank you!
