emotions really confuse things.
then some clarity comes after the waves are past
then the beach gets too dry again
but the tide returns to flood the level flattened scene.

Saying Tao does not care is coming from the conceptual personal standpoint of caring & not caring, these are dualstic

The universe/Tao is whole & non-dualistic, therefore it is neither caring nor uncaring

Your human attributes or mental conceptualizations do not apply to it whatsoever

Even 'Tao' as a concept is not the true real Tao, really you can only realize & Be Tao, not conceptualize Tao

But you can use the concept of Tao to do what you want, it ultimately does not matter

i think this is where all the little pockets of consciousness in the universe go off in their own weird directions and wobble for a while
shake shake shake, and then reconvene in iceland later.

I think if you look you'll find very few of the kind of people in your OP.  However, think about how horrible it would be if your life was that "good" or so you thought, then you have to come to terms with death.  I've thought about this could be something of an equalizer.  For a yuppie asshole, death is a huge fear, even a motivator for a lot of wasted energy, time.  For a starving african, being at deaths door might have a womblike comfort.

What makes happiness better than sadness, anyway?  What about those feelings in themselves makes one better than another?  Nothing, except our self centered notions on the matter.

You've been reading my mind today. These were almost exactly my thoughts as I was walking this morning. Especially this part. However, think about how horrible it would be if your life was that "good" or so you thought, then you have to come to terms with death.  I've thought about this could be something of an equalizer.

Well, yes, but in this grand scale of worthiness arent we making a mistake? You can matter to other sentient beings, so you DO get cared about by things of this world. Those moments of consideration are moments nonetheless and they existed in their proper time and place. Enjoy the fact that that is even possible in the realm of mortals. To desire an eternal consideration is perhaps one of the biggest follies - and besides could we rightly expect it any other way. Nature is brilliant in its ontological cold shoulder IMO
