I need to seal this! how? Help!
    #11221673 - 10/10/09 04:11 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Got a 5 gallon paint tub. I sawed out the middle. Placed a large piece of screen between the lid and the tub. I need to SEAL the lid shut now. Because occasionally the lid pops off and I get WBS everywhere. This is basically a large strainer.

Would Epoxy - Mighty Putty work?

JB Weld will hold pretty much anything together. Stuff is tough enough to drill and tap (make it into a nut, basicly).

Silicone should work, assuming that you want to ever get it off again.

Will work for Laetiporus sulphureus culture/spores (or any other Laetiporus actually), :pm: me.

what about duct tape or just tying the lid down by going lengthwise around the bucket?

if you plan on rinsing grains more than this one time, I dont think I would attach it permanently.. :

I tried tape. Even Gorilla tape. This is a permanent attachment. If not the weight of the wbs on the screen prys open the lid and wbs goes everywhere.

yea, plastic epoxy would be my choice too... but it might be cheaper and better just to buy a new bucket.

You might consider a "Gamma Seal" lid.

They cost about $6.00.

It is a screw on/off lid that you apply to the pail.

drill a couple sets of small holes around the perimeter.. run a zip tie through each, this way.. it can be removable in the future as need be. The problem with epoxies is that after the thing gets flexed a few times, the epoxy will crack and let go.

1/4 inch holes in the bottom of the bucket and a piece of window screen cut to fit snugly inside for the drain part. If you want to use the same bucket for the soak, simply set the bucket inside another bucket, fill it up and soak away. when it's time to drain just take the bucket out of the bucket and let it sit in the tub or wherever.

explain this snuggly part? you just lay a piece of window screen over holes?

Yeah, just cut a piece of fine mesh window screen (you can get at any hardware/building store or maybe from a junk pile) the size of the bottom of the inside of the bucket to keep the seed/grain from pouring out of your drain holes.
Holes in bottom of bucket (not the lid). Screen in bottom of bucket over holes.

You won't need a lot of holes either. maybe 10 max. Start with fewer and add more if you find it necessary.

i tried everything and found my best bet was to use gorrilla tape all around it.

Epoxy wouldn't hold. if it's too think the hinges couldnt hitch. and if it's too small there was not enough strength.

What is wrong with holes in the bottom of the bucket instead of in the lid? Any builders supply store will sell new buckets and lids for 5-6 dollars. And since you didn't ruin the bucket, only the lid; you have one for nesting for the soak.

Epoxy wouldn't hold.

If the gorilla tape dosen't hold, try some JB weld. I patched up a hole in a transmission with that stuff once.

If it's too thick and the hinges won't go, just jam it on there and slather some where ever you can get it. Let it cure for 3 days, don't get the quick dry stuff.
