bucket o' coir
    #8414020 -

i was wondering if FAE is needed for coir to colonize, and/or how important is it. i've seen things saying put the monotub in a bag, and others saying keep dark and allow a small amount of FAE.
the reason for my question is i was wondering if it is possible to just let it colonize mostly in the same sealed bucket it was pasteurized in. as in, pasteurize-let cool-check moisture-dump in grain-seal back up.
of course transfer to a monotub would happen eventually, this just seems like it would make less of a contam issue, like how you don't open grain jars until fully colonized (although i know they need FAE).
any opinions would be good, any knowledge would be better. thanks.

I think you're mixing up the terms FAE and gas exchange.

You don't want FAE during the spawn run. It's used as a pinning trigger once they're ready to fruit. A small bit of gas exchange is good, but not necessary in a decent sized bucket. My monotubs are never opened between the time spawn is introduced to the bulk substrate, and full colonization.

You also don't need to transfer the contents to a monotub. As long as there is sufficient headroom for the mushrooms to grow, you can fruit directly from the bucket.

rev. i was told not to put any holes in my coir buckets till the first signs of myc thru the casing layer...

soooooooooo with this being said, it would seem that no gas exchange prior to fruiting is required.

i vote you fruit in the bucket as well. i mean think about once your spawn/sub is colonized and you go to put it in a monotub, itll come out like a big ass cake and youll have to crumble that huge turd.

fruit in bucket, no gas exchange or FAE till youre ready to fruit
